A Modest Proposal Teenage Pregnancy

A Modest Proposal for the Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy and the Usage of Babies Born to Teen Parents in Unusual Cases Having to see poor little innocent children suffer from poverty, low income, and inexperienced, immature caregivers is an increasing situation occurring in today’s society. Many teenagers today are becoming parents and the majorities of them are not emotionally or physically ready to have the full responsibilities. According to teenhelp.com, there are 820,000 teens becoming pregnant each year. This means 34% of teenagers have a baby before the age of 20 and 80% of these pregnancies are accidental. These statistics show that this is a major problem and need immediate action. The real question is, how does this problem even occur? How do these teenage girls magically end up pregnant? I am proposing a solution that would solve this epidemic once and for all. I suggest that all females and males, ages 13-19, should be separated into 2 idealistic societies based on gender. Dividing the 2 societies will be a difficult problem. In order to visit with someone of the opposite sex, one would have to go through the course and complete it to get to the other side. In rare cases of accomplishing the obstacle course and a female and male come in contact to produce a baby, consequences will be paid. First, the mother of the fetus will have to keep the baby and not abort is. Second, the “parents” will have to be sent to the utopian society for future teen parents. Third, immediately following the birth of the baby, he or she will be deported from the United States. The baby will be sent away to an established American camp in a foreign country. There at the camp the baby will be properly and lovingly raised into an independent hard worker. My proposal to end this crisis will be very successful. There are many advantages coming from this solution. First off, the most obvious reason, the teenage pregnancy rate will lessen. With the females and males separated they’ll have to work harder to interact with the opposite sex and knowing that most teenagers are lazy, they won’t attempt to try the obstacle course. Having said that the teen pregnancy rate will drop, this brings me to my second advantage. There will be fewer babies suffering from all the numerous dangers of teenage parenting. For example, fewer infants will have to experience caregiving from someone who lacks the skills needed. Thirdly, teenagers will have more time to focus on education and their futures. Being sex-separated allows the teens to be more focused on homework and test dates rather than kissing and raging hormones. The graduation rates of teens will increase and more teens will go to college. According to teenhelp.com, only one-third of teenage mothers complete high school and receive a diploma. This would be something we wouldn’t have to worry about anymore if my solution is accepted. Teenage pregnancy is a wonderful topic to discuss about. The average teenage girl is not in full shape to cover the responsibilities of being a mother. Separating the males from the females is the best solution to prevent teenage parenting. In no way I will benefit from this because I too if having to get a girl pregnant would have to bear the duties of being a parent and I would have to go through the same experience. In my generation, more and more teens become parents and I am just trying out how to help end this sweeping issue.

Gaby Rodriguez’s The Pregnancy Project is a memoir that focuses on the high rate of unexpected teen pregnancies in low income, poverty-ridden areas. Rodriguez’s personal experiences with teen pregnancies through her family inspired her to encourage a change. Her mother and her siblings each became a teen parent, and Rodriguez became a witness to the hardships and struggles faced when teens experience an unintended pregnancy, and struggle to financially support their child(ren), often due to being unable to continue their education. Rodriguez, although many - including her siblings - believe she will make the same mistakes as her family, does not want to be seen as “... just another pregnant teen statistic with no future”…

Across the United States, federal and state policy-makers are trying to control what they see as an epidemic in adolescent pregnancy. But is there really an epidemic? And, more importantly, when did the American society start to perceive teenage pregnancy as such? Teenage pregnancy is a major concern in today’s society; there are many ways to prevent teen pregnancy, many people to get advice from, and many decisions that a teen parent must make.…

Today one of our most growing issues in America is teen pregnancy. Now a day’s media plays a huge role in a regular teenagers life. Television, magazines, and the Internet have been sending a message that sex is okay. Teenagers think that loosing their virginity before the age of 18 is “cool.” Many teens are put into situations where they feel they must have sex and don’t care about protection. Many teens that have sex without using protection can lead to pregnancy. Being a teenager and pregnant completely changes a teenagers life. First of all, many teens drop out of school so they can take care of the baby and work to support her baby. This causes a lack of education enabling the teenage mother to get a proper job to support her and her baby. Second, their are many health risks to babies of teen mothers. Thirdly, the teenage will grow up too fast and not have the proper childhood. Instead of being able to go and hang out with friends on a Friday night, they have to stay home and take care of their child. Not being able to live a proper childhood could cause depression for the teenage which is both bad for her and her child. In some cases teenagers make the smart decision of giving their child up for adoption, but other teenagers make the stupid choice of wanting to raise their child at such a young age. That is why I have come up with a solution to this horrible problem. My solution is that all boys should get a vasectomy at the age of 13. Before the vasectomy the doctor collects some of the boy’s sperm into a sperm bank for later use. After a man and women get married after the age of 21, they can go to the government to get a license that they are allowed to have kids. Both the husband and wife will go to their doctors with their license and passports, showing the doctor that they have the rights to have a child. The doctor will then take the sperm from the boy that was collected at the age of 13 and implant it into the women. This idea is a…

Teen pregnancy is a severe issue in our lives today where people become pregnant because they are insecure or not informed. Nearly four out of ten girls become pregnant at least once before the age of 20 ,but why does this happen? Most teens get pregnant because they want to know how it feels to raise a child or because they see others with children and they find them cute and want them to themselves. Others get pregnant because they don’t know about the different ways to stay safe. Many girls struggle with teen pregnancy because of their low confidence and self-worth. They feel that they are ugly and no male would show them attention unless they give them what they want.…

The fourth source by the Office Of Adolescent Health has a strong and detailed overview of teen pregnancy and childbearing. I found this source through University of Alabama Scout search engine and the audience is the general public. The source includes statistics from 2013 that 273,000 babies were born in the US from females ages 15-19. The text also mentions the sad reality that comes along with teenage pregnancy such as, mother and teen less likely to finish school, more likely to rely on public assistance, more likely to live in poverty as adults, and more likely to have children who has poorer education, behavioral, and health outcomes throughout their lives rather than a child born into older parents that are prepared for a child. Along with addressing the issues of teen pregnancy, the source also touches on strategies and approaches to prevent unwanted teen pregnancies such as the contraceptive method I talk about in my paper. This information adds to my paper because it demonstrates the problems with teen pregnancy and the steps the US can take to lower the teenage pregnancy rates.…

Teen pregnancy is closely linked to a host of other critical social issues — poverty and income, overall child well-being, out-of-wedlock births, responsible fatherhood, health issues, education, child welfare, and other risky behavior. There are also substantial public costs associated with adolescent childbearing. Consequently, teen pregnancy should be viewed not only as a reproductive health issue, but as one that works to improve all of these measures. Simply put, if more children in this country were born to parents who are ready and able to care for them, we would see a significant reduction in a host of social problems afflicting children in the United States, from school failure and crime to child abuse and neglect. While there are a number of vulnerable populations in the world, very few receive the publicity, funding, and assistance that they need to survive in today’s society. There is a vast amount of media coverage on the elderly population and homeless children. However, most vulnerable populations are not recognized and assisted due to personal biases or a lack of education regarding their situations. Teenage mothers are one such vulnerable population. The general public is usually biased against teenage mothers and feels that they are responsible for their situation. Because of this belief, they are often shunned by society and thought to be uneducated and promiscuous. In fact, most teen mothers become pregnant due to a lack of education about sex and contraception, particularly within their home environment. “Too often the problem can be traced to the failure of society’s adults to take responsibility for the safety of its children.” (Stepp, 2008)…

The age of adolescence is a time for growth and development. Young people between the ages of 10 and 19 years establish patterns of behavior and make life-style choices that can have long-standing consequences. Adolescent pregnancy is a significant public health problem, with 58 out of every 1000 females becoming pregnant each year (healthny.gov). Teen-aged parents lose out on many social, educational, and vocational opportunities, they often face poverty and depend on public income maintenance and health programs for both themselves and their children (healthyny.gov). ‘Reducing teen pregnancy and promoting health equity among youth’ is among one of the CDC’s top 6 priorities. Teen pregnancy is a public health battle that can be defeated, and is of paramount importance to health and quality of life…

“The United States has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world. Teen pregnancy costs the United States at least $7 billion annually” (“Teen Pregnancy”). Based on these statistics, high schoolers often enjoy unprotected sex. However, teenagers are not even close to being mature enough for the responsibility of raising a child. It is not an age issue, but a mental one, since teenagers do not realize that if protection is not used, they are simply asking for a baby. Teens do not bother thinking about the repercussions, and therefore, are missing out on life’s opportunities, including college, and a social life. Since parental wrath and abuse has not worked as a solution thus far, I propose to strike against teen pregnancy in a way that punishes the mother, father, and also the baby. Enumerating the consequences will assure the drastic drop of unprotected, premarital sex in the United States, since these repercussions will dissuade other teenagers from making the same mistake.…

Due to lack of education, poverty levels, and lack of parental guidance teen pregnancy has been on the rise in the United States. According to a 2012 report there were a total of 305,388 babies born to women aged 15-19 years old. At least one study estimates that 90% of these pregnancies are unintended. If we can find ways to help the teen prevent pregnancy it will save the United States approximately $9 billion per year, in health care.…

First come love, then comes marriage, then comes momma with the baby carriage is the way most conservatives wants society to adhere by. But in today’s world, most baby carriages are coming before marriage. Teenagers will often reach the point in their relationship in which they will begin to think about intercourse with their partner. This strong bond between girlfriend and boyfriend causes most teenagers to lose their sense. In a blink of the eye, relationships can escalate into a bond much more than anyone could anticipate. Teenage pregnancy had increased drastically over the years. Therefore the best defense against such danger is to prevent teenage girls for getting pregnant. Other than abstinence itself, birth control has become the best method to prevent teen pregnancy. Many feel that minors should not have such access to contraception which brings ethical challenges into play.…

Becoming a teen parent is always a scary thing to go through, but over the years, the United States has been trying new and different ways to lower the occurrence of unplanned pregnancies among teens. There has always been a high rate of teen pregnancies in the United States, and according to The Los Angeles Times, “Teen pregnancy rates in the United States have fallen in recent years, but the country still has a higher rate than any other developed country” (Roan). Even though the rates of teen pregnancy in the United States have fallen, they are still the highest in the world. Throughout the years, the United States has been experimenting and brainstorming new ideas to prevent teens from falling into peer pressure of having sex. They added child development classes to the high schools to teach teens what happens when they decide to get pregnant or accidentally get pregnant. Becoming a teen mom has many effects on teens that are forced to grow up faster, change their priorities, and push back their future plans.…
