A Mothers Worst Nightmare

On a very cold March day my son Garrett and my daughter Jordan were playing ball in our backyard when Garrett’s ball went into the neighbor’s yard. Garrett proceeded to go into their yard to get the ball not realizing how long their dog’s chain was. The dog lunged forward and grabbed Garrett by the back of his jacket and pulled him in and then proceeded to viciously attack him. This colossal fury wolf like dog began to assail my feeble little boy. While running out to save my motionless child, screams from a distance, “Help”, “Help My Brother” stood my panic-stricken daughter. Running as fast as possible, which seemed to be a never ending road? Screaming the whole way “No”, “No”. “God Help”, Someone Help Me”. Nobody came to my calling. From a far the vicious dog continued to growl and howl. Upon reaching my frail diminutive boy, there was vast amounts of blood every where. Snow covering the ground making it looks as though someone just slaughtered something. This colossal fury wolf like dog stood proud starring at me hovering over my son. Screaming to my son Garrett you need to run. With blood bucketing out, his reply, “He Won’t Let Me”. Again! Garrett you need to run. He looked as though he was in another world. He jumped up and began to run. This beast lunged forward trying to grab him again but thank god his chain was to short. Garrett ran all the way into the house. Following this trail of blood to my door, me and my daughter ran inside and shut the door. Grasping for air, Garrett sat on a little bench in the hall way. I grabbed the phone and dialed 911. Screaming in a frantic voice my son, my son he was attacked by a dog and there is a lot of blood. Crying out for help, the operators replied calm down Mrs. Coleman and tell me what happened? My son was attacked by our neighbor’s dog. Mrs. Coleman I’m sending an ambulance and police, they should be there any minute. I want you to stay on

Suddenly as if out of nothingness appeared a red eyed beast at the top of the wretched, steep hill we were attempting to scale. The wolf approached us with her steaming breath and her head low to the ground as if she was ready for the pounce. If we had run she would have reacted with great violence, so we kept our bodies and expressions as lifeless as a china doll. Her eyes were glowing like a fire replenishing itself; the eyes of a burning demon. Her coat was as grey as the fog that surrounded us, the beast froze corpse still, silent and motionless. It was a struggle to see. We could just see that the beast was among us. The brute still had made no move and the deep fog was thickening. It came to the point were we were blind in that we could not see any thing but the dull greyness of the…

On July 16, 2014 in Syracuse, New York a child and an older man were attacked by a Pit Bull and taken to the hospital. Elizabeth Whitehead, mother of the dog’s owner, was taking care of Chaos, the Pit Bull, while her son was in jail. Elizabeth had told Larry, her ex-husband, to take Chaos outside when two boys walked by and started screaming and kicking at the dog. Then Chaos began to get aggressive and bit Larry in the arm knocking him into a nearby car. Chaos did not let go of Larry’s arm until Elizabeth threw water at Chaos and jumped on top of him to get him to let go of Larry’s arm. Elizabeth told the two kids to hide behind a car. At some point, one of the boys was bitten. Throughout the whole incident, Chaos was on a leash and remained on the leash when animal control removed him. Chaos was never taken off the leash. Neighbors reported that the dog was not on a leash and ran down the street and chased one of them. Elizabeth reported that whatever the neighbors reported wasn’t true because she did put Chaos on a leash. The two who were wounded were transferred to a nearby hospital by ambulance (Pucci, 2014). This little boy and older man were attacked because of the fact that the little boys provoked the dog, screaming at Chaos as well as kicking him. This Pit Bull was only trying to defend itself and does not deserve to be punished.…

Isabelle could have sworn that the man was drooling over her. She chuckled to herself, knowing that she had picked the perfect weakling to complete her plan. All of the sudden she stopped walking, for she felt something wet rolling down her leg. Isabelle slowly turned around to face whoever had the nerve to do this to her. Just as Isabelle had suspected, an innocent puppy had come over and licked her leg. Isabelle looked down at it, stared, and then screamed! “Whos is this?” Isabelle was stewing! Her hands were shaking all the way down to the tips of her black, matte, flawless fingernails. She bent down picked up the puppy, and yelled once more. “Whoever this beast belongs to please claim it now, or youĺl never see it again!” By now, Isabelle knew that she had everyone's attention, yet still, nobody said a word. For the last time, Isabelle shouted to the crowd as they stared at her in horror. “Fine then, say goodbye to the mangy mutt!” Everybody thought that Isabelle was going to kill the puppy, but to their surprise, she simply walked away with it. Nobody knew what she planned to do with it, but nobody had the nerve say anything. For the first time in a century, the streets of New York were completely silent, that was, until the owner of the puppy walked into the streets saying “Hey, has anyone seen my…

After reading that description, which breed of dog comes to mind? A Doberman Pinscher; a German Shepherd Dog; or the favorite target of the media: the Pit Bull? If someone would have guessed any of those breeds they would be mistaken. This attack was perpetrated by a Dachshund. In recent years, communities have tried to pass laws banning certain breeds of dogs in attempt to manage this problem. While banning certain breeds may quell the fears of the public, enforcing effective legislation to address dangerous dogs on an individual basis would be a more prudent approach in the prevention of dog bites and attacks.…

The grating cold and bleak surroundings “made no impression on the man” (6) while the dog became “depressed by the tremendous cold” (7), painting the man as a figure unaffected by the severe conditions, immortal and daunting. He viewed the conditions as “cold and uncomfortable, and that was all” (6), which gave him a tough aspect of character, showing the ultimate power and force of nature over man, no matter how fortifying and strong he may be. These characteristics illustrates a contrast between the state of mankind and the state of nature. The animal also provides a comparison of the ignorance of humans’ instinct in comparison to the animal who understands the ferocity of nature. Allowing the environment to kill the man indicates that he is weak both mentally and biologically, while on the other hand the dog is stronger by surviving the same harsh surroundings of the brutal Yukon. “The brute had its instinct” (7) and “its instinct told it a truer tale than was told to the man” (7), because the man was “not much given to thinking”, displaying his obvious ignorance about the ways of nature and how the animal’s instincts trumped his own. Although the man was “keenly observant” (8), he was woefully inept at survival and despite the man’s tough aspects of character, his utter ignorance and over-confidence in himself led to his demise and allowed nature to shape his grisly…

At 4am dispatch received a call from the resident at 137 West Alexander Drive, who claimed to have heard a scream from his neighbours house. Captain Jason Long turned the case over to Officer Brice Tyler, Officer Lily Rayne, and I. At approximately 4:30am we arrived at the house knocking on the door. The young man answered with a smile on his face. I had noted that he seemed wide awake, as if he had been up for some time, as he invited us inside. We told him of our cause of being there, and he immediately told us the old man was visiting his sister in another town. He did not give us more details. instead, he showed us that the old mans belongings were exactly in there proper place. Afterward, he asked us to sit down in the bedroom, chatting easily about his evening. Soon after, he seemed to become agitated, raising his voice and speaking angrily. He was soon pacing and hitting the table, threatening us to make us stop agonising him, even though we did not say a threatening word to him.…

I received a call from my son’s uncle, Harold asking if I would give him a ride to a friend’s house to examine some pit bull puppies she had for sale. At first I had planned other activities for the day, but my daughter who overheard the conversation begged me to go. I made the plans to pick him up and as we were getting ready to leave, I reminded my daughter that we were not going for us. I had owned dogs in years past, and after the last one was stolen out of my yard, decided it was too painful to own a dog. Also, I had heard all the horror stories of people having pit bulls around their kids. When we arrived at my friend, Courtney’s house, I heard the deep barking from inside. My friend motioned for us to wait at the front door as she put…

Born in the 1950’s the world was recovering from World War II. Being the youngest out of 5 brothers and sisters meant he was the baby. Technology was just getting started. Television came out in the 1950’s, but being born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico electricity was still rare there. But my dad was privileged to live in the biggest house in the city, at the time. “We used candles until I was 8.” My dad smiles as he remembers the times when he would sit the table with his siblings exchanging scary stories. “They would say if you would go out into the woods at night by yourself you would see this devil-like creature that had one horse foot, and a big hat. But since I was the most daring, I went out one night, five blocks away from home, to try to find it but my mother came out and found me and dragged me by my ear all the way home.” “I was raised in a Catholic oriented home, that meant I had to put god first before anything else. And if I was bad I would get a punishment.”…

I’m the wolf in this forest. No one ever comes through here except for some wild dogs or squirrels. Those squirrels just kill me! They jump at the slightest movement. I sometimes chase like I’m gonna eat them or something—to get a kick out of it. Not that I’d have done it. I’m too yellow. But if there’s one thing I hate, it’s those wild dogs, I swear. One time I saw some of them strolling all nonchalant with their phony fur, acting like they owned the place. I damn near socked them—damn near.…
