COURSE TITLE- MEDIA, HUMAN PERSON AND SOCIETY
A PAPER ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF GROUP IDENTITY IN THE MEDIA: RACE AND ETHNICITY.

ABSTRACT
The media is an industry where the competition is intense and it has been used by the government individuals, organizations, institutions, society, and family etc. for various purposes. However, due to the increasing competition in the industry, many at times the functions and duties which the media owes to the society are significantly overlooked. There are various functions of the media some will be discussed later on in this paper. The aim of the media has to a fearfully large extent shifted from fulfilling its roles to the society, rather their focus is often on how much entertainment they can offer to their audience and how much money they can make and how quickly they can make it. Entertainment and money making is definitely key in the existence, survival and growth of this industry, nevertheless, this should not be achieved by inappropriately portraying a group’s identity in any form.

America's first form of government was under the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was written after the Revolutionary War, compiled of ideas by the Continental Congress. Under the Articles of Confederation its powers included conducting foreign relations, settling disputes between states, controlling maritime affairs, regulating Indian trade, and valuing state and national coinage. It purposely did not give the national government all the power in fear of tyranny like in Britain. In the end, the Articles of Confederation proved to be both inadequate in economic conditions and foreign relations.…

Stereotypes of all racial ethnicities have been a major issue not only here in the United States but as well globally. Many people tend not to realize that latinos/latinas in the film industry have to settle for roles that have always been associated with their cultural backgrounds. In the “Latinos Beyond the Reel” it not only showed what latinos in the film industry have to deal with on a day to day basis just to have work. In many cases they are forced into these roles because the role of the hero or character that has the happy ever after endings are typically played by predominantly white people. The roles of greaser, villain, house maid, sexy latina, and criminal are all of which have become the norm to latinos for decades. The film does a wonderful job of showing the reverse side of what lations feel and their thoughts towards these stereotypical roles. It just goes to show you how media can influence people's opinions and views on a ethnic race that has stuck for more than a century.…

When a type becomes a part of the discourse it is no longer stereotype, inserted out of context as a stand-in for a type, the group in essence has muted its negative connotation and reverted it back into a new archetype. Because the archetype “fits” within its context we can begin to discuss how these symbols are used in self-identity rather than whether or not they should be used at all; as Davalos explains the study of group ethnologies and gender should not be a “code for behavior”, but a “process-oriented” record of the group. However, the difference between its misuse by society and its use by the group as a tool to assist in self-identity is that its misuse is more ubiquitous in popular media. This is exemplified in by Brian Herrera in Latin Numbers: Playing Latino in Twentieth-Century U.S. Popular Performance when he refers to Rita Moreno’s role as Googy Gomez, a parity of the Latina spitfire roles she had previously played, and the stereotypical characters in many of the plays in Teatro Campesino. Herrera reminds us that stereotypes never disappear because when they are not being misused by base cultures they are used by the group in question to show that they should not be…

What do see when you take a look at a Latino? Do you notice what they are wearing? Or how they walk? Or maybe you just jump into a conclusion and stereotype him/her as an illegal immigrant. Throughout the years Latinos have faced many challenges because of their skin color, the way they dress, or because of the way they talk. Many films have shown Latinos as illegal immigrants to show us how the world views them, but a specific film “Born in East L.A” shows us how even though a Latino can be an American Citizen they still face many racist stereotypes. Even though a Latinos parents or grandparents have immigrated into the United States years ago and have permanent residency in the United States, they can still face push and pull factors that can motivate them to either go back to their country of origin or motivate them into staying in the United States. In this paper I will show how Born in East L.A represents Latinos as illegal immigrants through the techniques of stereotyping, immigration, and push/pull factors.…

Hollywood is amongst the top in power of the media empire in the United States, the productions that come out, become believed representations of the audiences that watch them, bringing down many that are shown in those productions. With audiences that are more than majority a darker color, than what are represented in Hollywood films, it brings to attention just how much of a problem it comes be. Minorities should be just part of the Hollywood creation, holding a social responsibility to derail from creating unrealistic stereotypes of ethnic characters that pigeonhole them, due to reasons of not having enough diversity in films and TV shows, create unwelcome clichés, and whitewashing over others cultures.…

During this course we were assigned to watch certain films that demonstrated the way Chicanos were viewed by non-Chicanos. The films I got observe both had negative condensation toward this group of people. They were being accused unfairly as well as treated very badly, sensationally facing discrimination and racism based upon their looks and was of speech and the way some dressed. These films were sending out a negative perspective out to society and causing even more hardships to the Chicanos outside of Hollywood and even to those trying to become part of the Hollywood social scene.…

According to a study published by the National Hispanic Media Coalition, titled “The Impact of Media Stereotypes on Opinions and Attitudes Towards Latinos,” the media portrayals of Latino/as are largely negative and unfavorable representations of the Latino/a culture. The study asked over 900 participants to report the various roles they remember seeing played by Latino/as in films and on television. The study found that seventy-one percent of the participants saw Latinos portrayed as criminals or gang-members on television or in movies, very often or sometimes. Furthermore, sixty-four percent see Latinos portrayed as gardeners on a consistent basis. The most frequent characters non-Latinos see Latinos play are as follows: criminal or gang member, gardener, and/or maid. This finding…

    The Social Identity Theory

A social identity is an element of a person’s self-concept, which is a derivative of a supposed membership in a certain significant social group. The social identity theory, as at first put together by John Turner and Henri Tajfel in the 70s and 80s, was able to introduce the idea of a social identity as a means in which to give an explanation about inter-group behavior (Kolak & Martin, 1991). The social identity theory can best be described as a speculation, which is able to predict specific inter-group relationships and behavior based on known group status distinctions, the apparent stability and authenticity of those status distinctions, as well as the perceived capability of moving from one group to the other. As a result, this concept…
