Bam is an ancient Iranian city which is located in the Kerman province south-eastern Iran, the Bam citadel is thought to be over 200o years old but unfortunately the massive earthquake that hit on 26th December 2003 at 05:26 local time destroyed the entire city. The Earthquake
This huge earthquake took the lives of 26,271 people and injured roughly 30,000 people.
So many were killed because of poor building construction, the major material for construction being mud bricks that did not comply with earthquake regulations set in 1989.
Relief operations were assisted by 44 countries, including the U.S. that sent personnel.
The earthquake was the biggest in the history of Iran, which lies on a part of the crust where the Eurasian and Arabian plate meet
The Iranian government set up tents as temporary accommodation for the survivors of the earthquake.
Survivors
The huge quake has left over 18oo children orphaned and 5000 have lost one of their parents, losing their primary carers these children were left venerable to abuse and exploitation. Many of the orphaned children have been transferred to major cities in Iran, including Kerman, Tehran and Shiraz. It is not only the children who are suffering from the psychological affects of the quake, a study carried out to asses the psychological distress of the survivors suggests counselling is necessary for those who survived this tragedy.
