A Puma at Large
➢ Lesson1 A puma at large
Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar. /The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from ? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside. ➢ Lesson 2 Thirteen equals one
Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since. /One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours! Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen

In the 1930s, two churches in Bradley with bells in relatively short steeples and standing in close proximity to each other became the setting for a Halloween prank enacted by a group of mischievous and ingenious boys. At each church, as groundwork for their shenanigans, they secured one end of a sufficiently long rope to the bell clapper and tossed the other end out of the steeple to the ground. The boys launched their stunt by ringing one of the bells from a hidden vantage point on the ground. Trying their best to control outbursts of laughter, they watched as the local law enforcement officers raced to the scene and entered an empty church in pursuit of the perpetrators. Once the officers engaged in an inspection of…

Many things will change today. People will change, things will change. Life will change. Father is infuriated. He will be all day. Everyone just sits around waiting for news. The room is tense. No one moves a muscle, except for father who is pacing back and forth. I can hear everyone breathing, and they can hear me. Then there is a knock on the door. Father walks over and opens it. It is a man. He seems out of breath. “Please excuse me. I was assigned to tell the town the news, since we can't print newspapers. The Stamp Act was put into effect a couple of hours ago. Thank you.” Then the man leaves. Father slams the door. “I am going to ring that parliament up by their neck!” “Father! Calm down.” He glances at me and then calms…

I felt expelled and exiled as they just left me there on the footpath in the chilling darkness of a Saturday night. “Get out of the car; we don’t want to be seen with you!” I can still hear those spiteful words playing over and over again in the back of my mind as I continue walking along the footpath of this unfamiliar suburb. I am completely alone with only my thoughts and the echo of my footsteps in the empty street. Upon hearing a faint resonance of a jingle, I look up again. I jump back as a black cat shoots across the path in front of me. I caught a glimpse of its dishevelled fur. It disappears, providing a screeching hiss that pierces the night air as it encounters a mammal in the undergrowth. They say a black cat at night is bad luck, but I honestly doubt my luck could have gotten any worse in light of recent events. It’s funny that the people you have loved and grown up with for almost your entire schooling journey can turn on you so effortlessly.…
