A Red Red Rose

In the poem “A Red, Red Rose” by Robert burns, the speaker uses figurative language to express the depth of his love towards his partner. The speaker of the poem expresses his love for a woman who he compares to both a red rose and a sweet melody. Furthermore, the speaker explains his love by saying, “And I will luve thee still, my dear, / Till a’ the seas gang dry” (Lines 7-8). The speaker is saying that he will love this woman until the oceans become dry. This phenomenon of drying oceans, if it does even occur, will mostly likely not happen until some time in the very far future. Therefore, the speaker is comparing the depth of his love to eternity. This communicates both the speaker’s infinite and deep love for his partner and his true and strong care for her. The poem goes on to discuss that the speaker will leave, but he will come back even if it means traveling ten thousand miles. Through the use of the metaphor that compares love to eternity, the reader can believe that the speaker will go to the ends of the earth for the woman he loves.
