A response paper on Susan Glaspell's Trifle
A response on Susan Glaspell’s Trifles The Trifle, the title suggests that the play is about something that is not important or insignificant actions. However, as the story goes, the truth is far from that. At the beginning of the story, the readers will notice that the two women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peter are brought to the crime scene to gather some items for Mrs. Wright, suspected for murdering her husband, in jail. The women who have an intention to gather Mrs. Wright’s household stuff to be brought to the jail to make her feel comfortable turn to be the ones who find the evidence and motives of the murder. In Trifle, the title is ironic because it implies what is not important for men is actually the key for solving the murder and finding the motives of the murder. In Trifles, the division between the roles of men and women in that era symbolizes the separation between sexes and gender issues in a community. Women’s roles as described in the play are merely reproductive and social. These roles place women in the kitchen; bake, cook, sew and do patchwork, clean the house, take care of their husband, and other household chores. Moreover, women are not considered as partners in a marriage, but the possession of their husband. Mr. Wright suppresses the things that his wife loves and prevents her doing her own interests. Mrs. Wright feels she is not able to ‘bloom’ as she wishes through her love of music and she becomes a timid and isolated housewife under her husband’s coldness. Besides, women’s intelligent is underestimated by men, so when women expresses their opinions about serious subjects or they have intelligent thoughts, they are not taken seriously by men. In contrast, in Trifles, the male characters are considered as intellectually superior to their wives who are treated as being trifle (not important and silly) for their concern in domestic details such as preserves, quilts, and knots. As the male characters are looking for the evidence, they begin to

In the play “Triffles”, written by Susan Glasspell, the denouement in the plot is satisfying and provides closure to the narrative. Tension is created between the male and female characters with use of dialogue. The dialogue has many instances throughout the play of demeaning and derogatory comments from the male characters directed toward the female characters. This sets up the motive for a silent defiance by the women. In the end, the women choose to conspire against the men and conceal evidence from them.…

“Trifles” is a classic feminist play about two women’s secret discovery of a woman murdering her husband. “A Jury of her Peers” is another edition of this story. During the 1830’s, the “Temperance Movement” which was the very first American reform campaign to emphasize the brutality of domestic violence. Insisting that domestic violence was the direct influence of alcohol the reformers believed that survival of the alcoholic’s wife was dependent on her rights to control her own earnings, gain custody of her children, and to seek a divorce on her own and none of these were options at that time for most women.…

The “Trifles” and “A Jury Of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell are very similar in the way that they both have got the same basic plot . However , one of them that is the trifles is a play and the other one is a short narrative story. According to me the story was easier to read and more clear to the reader as to how the various events were taking place but the play was difficult to understand as it was open ended it was made not very clear and also a play can be best understood when it is performed on stage as there are various other elements in a performance like multimedia-sound and lighting and not just the text which can be used to show various important aspects .…

Trifles and the story of an Hour are both stories with a feminist view. The theme in “Trifles” and “The Story of an Hour” has one prominent similarity concerning marriage that shapes the flow of story: from a feminist approach, we see that the women of both stories lose their individual identity as a result of male domination in the bond.…

The play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell takes place in a bleak, untidy kitchen of a farmhouse. Farmer John Wright has been murdered and his wife, Minnie Wright, is taken into custody as a suspect to his murder. Sheriff Peters and County Attorney George Henderson pride themselves on their powers of detection and logical reasoning. They begin searching through the house trying to find any sort of evidence. But it is the two women, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, who discover the trifles in which is the key evidence that the men are looking for. Because this story is set in the twentieth century community, the men take no concern in what the women have to say or do. By the end of this play, the women decide not to tell them men of the evidence they found in the farmhouse since the men believe that they are superior. In the play “Trifles”, Glaspell shows us that the men have the role of being head of everything and how the women do not get as fairly treated.…

The play “Trifles” written by Susan Glaspell is based in the early 1900’s when it was typical for the masculine gender role to dominate the feminine role. The theme is of the play is power and domination over females during this time era. Upon analyzing this play, Mr. Hale and Mr. Peter’s are investigating the murder and they portray themselves as strong and determined, but in reality they are not as alert as the women are. In conclusion, the women figured out that Mrs. Wright murdered her husband by simply observing the house and finding the dead bird; the men were upstairs at the scene of the crime and could not figure it out. Men to this day still do not understand that sometimes the woman’s way of thinking is better!…

There is a strong depiction of irony regarding this ideology in both works. Glaspell makes a clearly ironic jab at this patriarchal belief with Mrs. Peter's and Mrs. Hale's husbands, the sheriff and the _, whose sole responsibility it was to find Mrs. Wright's motive for the homicide had no significant role in the resolution. Glaspell makes a point to elaborate on what clearly differentiated women from men in the male depiction of gender roles in Trifles.…

In the play, “Trifles,” Susan Glaspell demonstrates the inequality that occurs between men and women during the 20th century. From the opening scene, the two women are not given much attention unlike the men, until they are separated from them and become the main characters. Although the women are seen as inferior to men, they prove that they are much more capable as they are the ones who solve the case by thinking outside the box. They find the real motive behind Mrs. Wright’s action and are able to understand her doing because of the way women were treated back then. Even though both women decide to defend Mrs. Wright by hiding the evidence, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters sympathize with her, but for different reasons.…

Women have been treated as lessors to men in the past, feminine equality is a new concept that has only been around for about a century. In both plays “Trifles” and “A Doll’s House” they address stereotypes of women during these time periods. “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell explores the mysterious death of Mr. Wright (Mrs. Wrights husband). As the play progresses the audience gets insight to Mrs. Wright’s life, and how Mr. Wright treated her. Mr. Wright was known to be a brash, and unruly man. The women in this play (Ms. Hale and Mrs. Peters) both know the kind of man Mr. Wright was, The men may have known this too, but the time period the play takes place in, domestic violence toward women was not highly looked into. Have you ever wondered; just how much can one person take from another? What amount of cruelty and abuse persuades the fury in a typically passive person to leap into aggressive action? Susan Glaspell's play Trifles shows us just how far one woman, Mrs. Wright, is pushed before she snaps. This is a classic tale of spousal abuse, based off of a true story, which was not too uncommon and almost expected back in the late nineteenth century. Back then women were controlled by their husbands and were seen as insignificant by all the men around them. In this play the women fight the patronizing and belittling society and join together to support another woman. During this time in history, "marital conflict, frequently including violence, was mostly taken for granted in many working-class communities; in itself, it was rarely sufficient to warrant communal censure." (Hammerton 155)…
