A Review of a Beautiful Mind and Its Depictions of Schizophrenia
Introduction:
In the year 2001 the movie A Beautiful Mind was released as a biography of the life of John Nash. As the movie flows, we can easily see how his condition, schizophrenia, interferes with his personal life as well as with his home life and social life. The movie does a good job in describing Nash’s experiences and some of the help that put him back on his feet, and that motivated him to stay strong.
Plot Review: The movie A Beautiful Mind begins with an odd young mathematician by the name of John Forbes Nash Jr. who is attending Princeton University in 1948. There is where he meets his roommate Charles, which is his first hallucination, but we don’t know that until later on. While at Princeton, Nash discovers a mathematical theorem and becomes a professor at MIT. John soon gets married to one of the graduate students by the name of Alicia, but shortly after that is diagnosed with schizophrenia. Nash believes he is some sort of spy because one of his hallucinated agents told him he had to work for the government because his profile is very high. Nash believes his hallucinations are real and he has to be taken to special psychological hospital. Nash never loses the support from his wife Alicia. She does have a hard time, but she tries to deal with his condition because of the love she has for him. Alicia and his baby are the only ones that are there to motivate him, but he suddenly gives in once again and fails to demonstrate that he is completely in the real world; Nash parts from society and has many hallucinations once again with Charles, Charles niece, and William, which is the man that makes Nash believe he is working for the government. Nash decides to give it his all for the love of his wife and son, after realizing that William and his other hallucinations are not real life. Nash works with his condition by avoiding and ignoring Charles, the little girl, and William; although

In the movie, "A Beautiful Mind", John Nash displays classic positive symptoms of a schizophrenic. This movie does a fair job in portraying the personality and daily suffering of someone who is affected by the disease, although the film does not give a completely historically accurate account. In the film, John Nash would fall into the category of a paranoid schizophrenic, portraying all the symptoms that are typical for this illness. Nash suffers delusions of persecution, believing that there is a government conspiracy against him. He believes that because he is supposedly a secret agent working for the government breaking Soviet codes, and that the KGB was out to get him. In addition to these delusions, Nash experiences hallucinations which are shown from the moment that he starts college at Princeton University. He hallucinates that he has a roommate, when in reality it is uncovered later in the film that he was in a single occupancy room his entire stay at Princeton. Additionally, he frequently has conversations and takes advice from this imaginary roommate. He also imagines a little girl that is introduced to him by his alleged roommate. While going about his daily life, he is constantly surrounded by these inventions. These are classic positive symptoms of the paranoid schizophrenic, which are heavily supported by DSM-IV. Psychological predictions also agree with the behavior John Nash exhibited in the movie. This movie accurately teaches the public the positive affects of a schizophrenic. The movie does not portray schizophrenia as a split of Nash's personalities, rather a split from reality. He imagines other people and hallucinates vividly throughout the movie. Even at the conclusion of the movie, John Nash learns to accept and cope with his psychological disorder. He learns to ignore his hallucinations and is very careful about whom he interacts with. At…

In A Beautiful Mind, director Ron Howard uses symbolism to show the danger of using isolation as a method of coping with problems. This film sheds some light on the horrors of a mental illness and advocates the importance of accepting others’ help. When John Nash is suffering from schizophrenia, the contrast between darkness and bright lighting is a metaphor for the darkness he surrounds himself with despite his wife’s attempts to help. The venetian blinds obscuring his face when he stands at his window symbolize the confinement of isolation.…

John Nash is the main character in the film A Beautiful Mind. Nash suffers from extreme schizophrenia and this radically affects his relationships with everyone around him. His wife, Alicia, must deal with the brunt of this, even before his condition was realized she would not often see him due to the fact that his hallucinations would keep him away from home for hours. When his schizophrenia was discovered, matters grew much worse, and thus was the inception of many years to come of intense emotional struggle. For months Alicia had to cope with watching her husband’s brutal treatment. Once released, he was put on a mental-suppressant that rendered him incapable of evaluating the realm of mathematic which he once had. Along with this came unwillingness towards activity, an inability to help with their new born baby, and a drastically decreased sexual drive. All this over many months and eventually years weighed very heavily on Alicia who now had to work to support them. This was bluntly illustrated during a scene in which John is unwilling to provide comfort for her at night and admits that the drugs are the reason for such. She finally breaks and goes to the bathroom in a destructive rage, breaking many things and screaming in despair. Moreover, his spontaneous dysfunction in the work place and eventual absence cause the burden of schizophrenia to spread also to his coworkers.…

John Nash suffers from Paranoid Schizophrenia. He is a gifted mathematician who began graduate school at Princeton University in 1947. We will begin Mr. Nash’s history from this point in time, for it is here that his symptoms first began to emerge. During this time in his life he is in what is known as the prodromal phase of schizophrenia, which is a period before active psychosis, during which time symptoms first appear but aren’t yet prominent or recognized. Some behavioral examples of this include Mr. Nash’s social awkwardness, his grandiosity, and his unique sensory ability (he was able to see a light pattern from a glass and synchronize it perfectly with patterns on one of his school-mate’s ties).…

A beautiful mind is a great way to describe John Nash because he was a brilliant person who suffered and fought through Schizophrenia. Nash was born on June 13, 1928, in Bluefield, West Virginia. His father was an electrical engineer for the Appalachian Electric Power Company. His mother, name was Virginia Martin and she had been a schoolteacher before she married. Nash had a younger sister, Martha, born November 16, 1930. Nash attended kindergarten and public school. Nash's parents worked hard to create a challenging learning program for their son's education, and arranged for him to take advanced mathematics courses at a local community college during his final year of high school. Nash attended Carnegie Mellon University with a full scholarship, and the George Westinghouse, which was a scientific/mathematic competition that helped students earn scholarship money. He initially majored in Chemical Engineering. He switched to Chemistry, and eventually to Mathematics. After graduating in 1948 with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in mathematics, he received a scholarship to Princeton University where he pursued his graduate studies in Mathematics. I enjoyed many things from the film A Beautiful Mind including the cast, the interpretations of being schizophrenic, and also the small amount of romance between John and Alicia. I think that the cast was very well picked, Russell Crowe did an outstanding job portraying a man with schizophrenia. I could tell that Crowe was very comfortable with this role, considering how well he portrayed John Nash. When I think about John Nash and his awkward, yet sophisticated, personality Russell Crowe really does justice to John Nash. Also, the cast for the other students, John’s peers, were well picked out also. All of the other students were intelligent and also a little cocky which makes sense as to why they don’t accept John. I also enjoyed the interpretations of being schizophrenic. It is very interesting going into the mind of John Nash and seeing the people that only he sees, and hearing the voices that only he hears. Lastly I enjoyed how the film had a little spark of romance between John and Alicia, but that the entire film wasn’t about the romance, and love. The film was more about John and his brilliance than his love life.…
