Paper 3
“Symbolism” the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. I decided to use this specific form of figurative language to compare the stories of the yellow wallpaper and a rose for Emily. I decided to use the house from the rose for Emily and the wallpaper from the yellow wall paper as my two symbolizing comparisons. The yellow wallpaper represented pain, death, mental abuse, loneliness, suffering, and the filling of being trapped. The house in the rose for Emily represented death, sadness, pain, abandonees, suffering, and loneliness as well.
After reading both stories I broke each one down and started to compare the two. After the reading I learned that both main female characters in both story were looked at as having some type of psychological problem from the outside looking in on them as individuals. In the yellow wall paper she was forced to go to a summer home and lived in a room in a house that pretty much drove her nuts. Emily on the other hand was madly infatuated with a man that didn’t want to marry her and it drove her crazy that she decided to kill him and keep his body in her house so that he could never leave her, and still manage to have a romantic relationship with a dead man. These two women in their own way felt some type of abandonees I feel like in the yellow wallpaper she felt as though her husband abandon her , just like in a rose for Emily she felt a since of abandonees when the man she wanted turned her down .
“The yellow wallpaper” represented death and power gone wrong. In my opinion him forcing his wife to go to the summer house caused her conditions to worsen and she began to see images of faces in the wallpaper of her room. She started believing the images are of women creeping behind the paper and she cannot help but to fixate on them. She tried to tell her husband, he didn’t listen and with time she sees the images more
