A Script of the Ant and the Grasshopper
THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER
Narrator: Once upon a time in a field on a summer day, there was a happy Grasshopper who liked to play, sing, and dance all day.
Grasshopper: What a splendid day! *sighs*
**LAZY SONG**
Today I don’t feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay on the grass
Don’t feel like picking up some food
So I’ll just play and sing all day
‘Cause today I swear I’m not doing anything..
NOTHING AT ALL! Woohoo, wooh---.
Ant: Don’t you ever get tired of playing?
Grasshopper: Oh hey, Ant! Who, me? … Of course not! It’s very fun you know.
Ant: Don’t you ever work?
Grasshopper: Who, me? Of course not! Don’t you want to play with me?
Ant: No, I still have work to do.
Grasshopper: Come on, don’t be like that, let’s sing together. Don’t you wanna know what FUN is?
**THE FUN SONG**
F is for Friends who do stuff together.
U is for You and me.
N is for Anywhere and anytime at all.
Right here, wanderin’ ‘round the vast, green fields.
Ant: F is for Field work, gathering food for winter
U is for Unlaziness.
N is for numbering how much food you have gathered.
Here, workin’ hard in vast, green fields.
Grasshopper: Ant, those things are no fun at all!
Ant: That’s not true, it’s also fun to wooooork. (On my own’s That I have never knoooown)
Grasshopper: Work, work, work! … That’s all you do… You don’t have time to play or sing with me.
Ant: It’s not like that, grasshopper. I’m just busy.
Grasshopper: Why are you in such a hurry?
Ant: I have to take home this heavy kernel of corn.
Grasshopper: What for?
Ant: I have to store food for the winter.
Grasshopper: How can you think about winter on such a fine day?
Ant: Because the winter will be here soon, and food will be too hard to find… and you should do the same.
Grasshopper: I don’t want to worry about winter right now! You just go ahead and work, work, work… and I will just play, sing, and dance.
Ant: Soon, you will not have enough food to eat.
Grasshopper: I have plenty of food

Bees, honey, the Black Madonna, the 1960’s, the power of women, what do all of these things have in common? All of these things are what one would think of when reading the book, The Secret Life of Bees. Those who have read The Secret Life of Bees know that it is not a book about different kinds of bees and how bees live their lives, but it is a book about a poorly treated girl named Lily who runs away from home. She runs away to Tiburon, South Carolina with her friend Rosaleen. While in South Carolina, she makes friends with three black women who make honey, a black man named Zach, who she comes to love, and a group of Catholics known as The Daughters of Mary. In the book The Secret Life of Bees, there are many themes. Racism, friendship, and dealing with a loss are just three of the major themes.…

In Western literature, birds are often used to symbolize humans. Birds’ anatomy, behavior, and perceived emotions combine to make the bird a useful symbol of humans, their thoughts, and their emotions. Z.Z. Packer adds to this list of more commonly used similarities between birds and humans by endowing the birds in her short story, “The Ant of the Self”, with the gift of speech. By doing so, Z.Z. Packer highlights her use of a squawking assortment of colorful African birds as a symbol for Spurgeon. The birds serve as a catalyst for the story, giving rise to Spurgeon’s and his father’s trip to the Million Man March. As the duo makes their way from Jasper, Indiana to Washington, D.C., Packer introduces a succession of likenesses between Spurgeon and the birds. These likenesses show the extent to which the birds function as a symbol for Spurgeon. Most importantly, however, the birds allow the reader to more intimately examine the father-son relationship between Ray Bivens Jr. and Spurgeon.…

Many believe that interactions produce knowledge. This is seen in Cathy Davidson’s “Project Classroom Makeover” and in Steven Johnson’s “The Myth of the Ant Queen.” Davidson discusses the importance of working collaboratively. Johnson explores different systems and the interactions within them. The system is made of many individuals that need to communicate to solve certain problems. Both authors discuss the hierarchies and how it limits individuals from collectively working together. Without a hierarchy, interactions between individuals allow for them to learn.…

Steinbeck introduced many new characters over the course of the second chapter, most of which are not set at the ranch in Soledad, and met in the bunk house. This new living space, known as the bunk house, provides proof of a very simplistic lifestyle. The small boxes given to each worker for their possessions shows in depth the limited amount of items they have. Each character have attributes and characteristics that differed from one another. Among these new characters is the old swamper, Curley, Curley's wife, Carlson, Slim, and Crooks. Crooks, who is "a nigger" (Steinbeck,), acquired the role to be "the stable buck" where "the boss [gives him] hell" when he gets angry. As far as social hierarchy the boss, who "gets pretty mad sometimes, but [is a] pretty nice" (22) guy, holds the most power throughout the ranch, and is closely followed by a character named Slim. This is an extremely interesting insight on how race is approached and dealt with on the ranch. Although Crook's is a "nice fella" many take it for granted that he should be treated badly since he is black. This notion seems to be imprinted in the minds of the ranchers, even when people such as the old man are full of compliments for Crook's.…
