Throughout the speech of “immigrant chronicle by Peter Skrzynecki and “The arrival” by Shun Tan will be examined. The aspects of belonging to family and place will be explored. Particular the challenges associated with these aspects. Belonging is when two or more people come together to form a connection. However, often there is a pressure to be like other members in a group in order to belong. However individuals sometimes find it hard to belong to family because they are different cultures, different experiences among the member of the family. It also important to belong to a place especially for migrants because they feel dislocated from their homeland to place such as unfamiliar language and culture. Belonging to family is important because a family shapes an individual’s identity. Despite this, individuals sometimes find it hard to belong to family. Peter and feliks skrzynecki don’t have a strong sense of belonging to each other because they don’t have many cultural commonalities and feliks is not peter not biological father. In the poem feliks skrzynecki he writes “further and further south of Hadrian’s Wall” repetitions and metaphor is used to convey that peter is becoming increasingly distant from his father.
Also Symbolism is used in “ I forget my first polish word” which conveys that peter forgets his polish language, demonstrate that he is becoming more different to his father and that their sense of belonging is weakening as peter grows older..
