A Speech About a Legend
Ryan Peplinskie

"White lips, pale face, breathing in the snowflakes." "It's too cold outside, for angels to fly." Not many people can sing these words with the same amount of heart and feeling as this one amazing, talented, English singer I have in mind. How many people can say they've helped write songs for one of the world's most popular bands today? How many people can say they left their homeland to go live on a stranger's couch in an unknown country to record their first album? How many people can say they've been nominated for "Song of the Year" at the Grammy Awards after having performed that same song with Sir Elton John? Practically no one, except for Edward Christopher Sheeran, or as most people would know him by, Ed Sheeran.

When most people think of a role model nowadays, they think of people like Ellen DeGeneres or Barrack Obama. But when I think of a role model, I think of Ed Sheeran. His background is incredible. He was born in a small town called Halifax in England and moved to another small town called Framlingham where he raised and learned music. After recording his first few EPs there, he moved to London in 2008 to play gigs starting off in small venues and for sometimes as little as 5 people. After playing more and more gigs as the years passed, he left his old management company and moved to Los Angeles in 2010. He played open mic nights all over the city until his talent was spotted by Jamie Foxx, who was so impressed that he offered Sheeran the use of his recording studio and the run of his Hollywood home for the rest of his stay.

Throughout 2010, Ed began to be seen by more and more people all over the world on the internet through Youtube, including The Independent newspaper and Sir Elton John. After releasing 3 more independently released EPs, including one that reached number 2 in the iTunes chart without any promotion or label, Ed was signed to Asylum/Atlantic Records. 6 weeks after appearing on TV to perform his debut single

In the music industry, there have been many figures that have transformed the business, as we know it. Perhaps the most successful of these is Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid. Antonio Reid has been best known for his determination to strive for success. He exhibits an array of skills both in his musical talents and managerial flair. Having been exposed to both the singer/songwriter, and behind-the-scenes work since his roots in the industry, Reid has without a doubt grasped the music business in its entirety in a way in which no other person has. Displaying musical skill in vocals, piano, and percussion (Net Industries, 2011. Para8) as well as his outstanding ability to manage and multitask, describing himself as an “overachiever”(Norment, 2003. Para 8.), Reid fits all the requirements for a successful career in the music industry. However what set’s him apart from the rest, is his infamous ability know talent when he see’s it. Despite being unable to describe exactly how he obtained such a skill in the industry, stating, “It’s something that I feel when I meet an artist”(Net Industries, 2011. Para10), it is without saying that he has proven his ability to recognise star-quality when he can see it. This is evident through his countless triumphs in his career, discovering successful artists such as Toni Braxton, TLC, Usher and Pink, just to name a few. (Net Industries, 2011. Para10&11) Reid’s unique sense of knowledge in the music industry, along with his other attributes, distinguishes him from others in the music industry, and has helped his success. His passion for all genres of music, having grasped the importance of musical diversity, has set him apart from others in his line of work. Not only is this something that I admire in Reid, but also it is something that I wish to apply to my own career in the entertainment industry, and hope to obtain enough experience and knowledge to strengthen a sense of understanding of what can be successful music. I…

It is true that some of his music can be somewhat violent and explicit but this is what happened to him and he is willing to tell his story. What makes people listen is that he is being so open about it and they can relate to certain materials he went through. His song “Not Afraid” is also a good song to relate things to. This song is about how Eminem is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in and what he thinks is right. It is an influence on individuals for them to do the same. Basically it is…

Apocalypses are defined as the end of the world, whereas creation represents the beginning. What comes in between? Once an Apocalypse ends, a creation story begins; thus, there is a cycle. This cycle is portrayed by Richard Matheson in his novel I Am Legend. The protagonist, Robert Neville, survives an apocalyptic world war and a dust-storm-carried disease, but he survives alone. He is the end and the new beginning. Thus, Matheson suggests that within an apocalypse, there can still be elements of a creation myth. To truly begin again, Neville must resort to warrior-like behavior: killing. Neville only has the intention of staying safe and finding a companion to make the apocalypse more bearable. However, during an apocalypse, things never go…
