Henry Smart, in the novel A Star Called Henry encounters many women in his life. He attracted all the young women he met through his brute and masculine look, and while some made a small dent in his life, others stayed and lived an eternity in his heart.
Melody smart, henry’s mother played a role of motherhood at such a young age making life even more stressful for her down the road. She gave birth to many children before Henry whom all did not make it passed a couple years, but once she gave birth to him, the father became even more absent in there lives. While Henry and Victor caused many commotions throughout the city of Dublin, their father worked, and leaving the mother behind at home. That later caused her life to spiral down into depression and she became an alcoholic, and while she drank at night she would gaze upon the stars and looked at them as if those are her lost children. Henry and his mother melody did not have a close relationship, which seemed normal for many families back in that era and for that reason Henry did not find fulfillment in his relationship with her.
Granny Nash never really cared for Henry in his later years. She didn’t have a big impact in the book either, but as Henry grew older he became more curious and wanted to know more about his father. The one person who knew so much about his father was Granny Nash, but she wouldn’t give him information so easily. Henry would exchange books of which she liked for information. The more he knew about his father the more he started to hear about a mob boss, Alfie Gandon, who his father worked for and is the same person who also killed him. The only impact Granny Nash gave Henry smart is that she gave him knowledge about his father’s murderer, which he kills at the end of the book to avenge his father’s death. Granny Nash and Henry did not have a fulfilling relationship.
