At the beginning of the 20th Century, Max Weber developed a theory of relational authority structures to support his concept of the “ideal bureaucracy”. Although Weber noted that this “ideal bureaucracy” did not exist anywhere, his “ideal type” describes many of today’s organizations. Weber’s bureaucracy was an organization characterized by six key elements. Those elements were a division of labor, a hierarchy of authority, formal rules, impersonal relationships, a formal selection of staff and management with a career-oriented mindset. This concept served as a backbone for Weber to theorize how work could be done in large groups.…

If recently asked what had been the most important event along with the industrial revolution during 18th and 19th centuries, people in the west should immediately replied; that is the emergence of bureaucracy of which Marx Weber had been known as the father. However, after the existence of his concept on bureaucracy and its central role in bringing a great impact on the way people lived and were organized; people started asking whether Weber's ideas continue to form the basis for organization and are still descriptive of all cases. From hence, an intense dispute around his model called "rational system" theory was tremendously raised by considering famous studies of sociologists following the opposite system known as "natural" or human relation school. This essay will therefore critically evaluate Weber's Understanding of Bureaucracy through the aspect of Weber's ideal types that reflect the structures of bureaucracy, the growth of bureaucracy or bureaucratization, and the effects of bureaucracy on individual and end with an application of Vietnamese bureaucracy.…

Max Weber is the writer most often associated with the bureaucratic approach to organizations. Weber’s ideas of bureaucracy were a reaction to managerial abuses of power. He looked for methods to eliminate managerial inconsistencies that contributed to ineffectiveness, and his solution was a set of principles for organizing’ group effort through a bureaucratic organization. Although the term bureaucracy, has been popularized as a means of referring to organizations that “rule too rigidly by the book,” these principles are found in virtually every formal organization, today.…

In light of this, bureaucracy is defined as ‘the body of officials and administrators, especially of a government or government department; administration characterized by excessive red tape and routine.’ “To fully appreciate and understand the work of Max Weber, one therefore has to keep the historic context in mind, and not "just" see his work as a caricature of bureaucratic models.” Max Weber lived in a time when many theorists were working on improving the efficiency of industrial processes. According to Jagg Xaxx, Weber advocated a management system that emphasizes clearly defined roles for management and labor. This system is designed to do away with excess and superfluous interaction, movement and communication in order to maximize productive work. The development of this theory can be seen as the reflection of an era in which machines were assuming the workload across many industries and becoming an integral part of people 's lives, making them more receptive to the idea of a workplace as a giant machine. Prior to the dawn of the age of bureaucracy, social and financial roles were…
