A Sympathetic Antonio in Hector Tobar's The Tattooed Soldier
Sympathetic Antonio
In Hector Tobar’s novel, The Tattooed Soldier, many of the characters experience unpleasant situations. These include homelessness, joblessness, and murder. These unpleasant situations lead to negativity in their lives, and this negativity can evoke feelings of sympathy. Of all the characters in Tobar’s novel, I believe Antonio deserves the greatest amount of sympathy because he lives a life of constant despair and is often treated unfairly, which is like a trap from which he cannot escape.
Antonio’s wife and son, Elena and Carlos, are killed by Longoria. In the chapter, Fire Escape”, on page 183, it states “I did not bury my wife and child, but I can stand and seek vengeance, for them and for the many, for the anonymous dead”. “Now Antonio knew how Elena must have felt when she marched in the demonstrations. Now he could see why she was a revolutionary, he could understand what had been a mystery before”. “This is how Elena felt, tall and strong. This is what she was trying to tell me, but I wouldn’t listen. Elena knew that to march with the many was to stand tall. Elena loved me because she knew I could be a brave fighter” (Tobar 183). This shows that Antonio is upset because his wife Elena and his son Carlitos are killed. Elena had written a complaint letter to the government because people were dying due to the filthy water caused by the garbage that people dumped onto it. She requested that the changes should be made in a nearby city. She was also famous for making her points clear. The Guatemalan government sent a soldier named Longoria to kill Antonio and Elena for complaining to the fascist government and they found it to be a threat. Their family have been suspected of being informer immigrants and are being hunted down. Antonio escaped death by being at work when his family was killed. After the death of his wife, Antonio had no choice but to escape from there if he wanted to live. He ran away to Los Angeles, hoping for a

Another character who plays an important role in both texts is Manuelito or Hastiin Ch’il Hajin (Man of Black Weeds), a Navajo born in 1818, son-in-law of the famous leader Narbona. Both the Americans and the Navajos looked at Manuelito as a leader through the period of the long walk (Denetdale 52). Denetdale focuses on Manuelito in a chapter entitled “A Biographical Account of Manuelito: Noble Savage, Patriotic Warrior, and American Citizen.” Her attention is directed at the multiplicity of views of Manuelito in established American history, Navajo oral history, and the popular discourse. Denetdale includes Navajo stories of Manuelito from his son, Bob Manuelito or Naaltsoos Neiyéhí, and Herrera, a Navajo chief at Bosque Redondo, highlighting…

Trujillo employed this method against people whom he believed had wronged him or to impede their efforts of defeating his government. The author demonstrates this through the unfortunate series of events experienced by the Mirabal family. For instance, after the incident where Minerva rejected Trujillo's improper advances by slapping him, her father is "sent to the capital for questioning," but in reality it was more than a matter of questioning. Minerva's father was subject to extreme torture as punishment for his daughter's audaucity, and it was later discovered that "he has gone mad" due to his imprisonment. Furthermore, the three Mirabal sisters exposed themselves and their family to greater danger as they commenced with their political activity. They were being constantly spied on, received numerous threats, and were eventually imprisoned. Likewise, other individuals were suppressed by the SIM. Trujillo himself has implied the use of cruel tactics to silence educators of communism or politics that contradicted his own, when he quotes "but we've been teaching those teachers their lessons all…

Soldiers who barely knew each other were thrust into extremely dangerous situations. At the onset of the novel Paul has a naive judgement about war however, that quickly changes as Paul witnesses bloodshed. Paul and his friend go to visit their comrade, Kemmerich, whose leg got amputated. All the soldiers including Paul were aware that there friend was on the brink of death. Instead of being concerned, Paul and the others worry about who will get Kemmerich’s boots, “But as it is the boots are quite inappropriate to Kemmerich’s circumstances, whereas Muller can make good use of them” (Remarque 21). Furthermore, the death of a fellow soldier doesn’t affect Paul and the others since they show no sympathy instead they are egoistic and obsessed with who will get the boots. Paul’s tone demonstrates that he no longer cares for his buddies but rather focuses on his own selfish desires. Paul’s emotions have vanished and he believes that the boots are “inappropriate to Kemmerich’s circumstances”. Paul insists that “Muller can make good use of them” since the boots will be of no use to Kemmerich once he is dead. Paul can no longer feel the emotions that every individual feels such as sympathy, portraying that he is completely been dehumanized. The boots symbolize the cheapness of human life in war. A good pair of boots according to the soldiers is more valuable and more durable than a human life. The boots also show the attitude and emotions of soldiers as they are no longer sensitive or feel sad. Paul’s emotionless state shows how it affected his mentality “When a man has seen so many dead he cannot understand any longer why there should be so much anguish over a single individual” (Remarque 181). Upon seeing so many deaths Paul no longer…

In The Tattooed Soldier, Antonio is flooded with guilt as he carries on after the loss of his wife, Elena, and son, Carlos. The guilt is easily seen as Antonio travels by bus to San Cristobal. The author writes, “He vomited out the window, wept into his hands, pounded a fist into his thigh. I am a coward. I am a coward. He had failed to summon the courage to jump from the bus in the square in San Cristobal and confront the man who had killed his wife and son“ (Tobar 19). Antonio is sickened with guilt as he is reminded that his family is gone and he did not stand up against the man who murdered his family. The sight of Longoria reminds Antonio that his family is gone and that he is still living, leading Antonio to feel much guilt. Alternately, El Casper is burdened…

“Conflicts” among characters in Hemingway’s “Soldier’s Home” helps the reader to understand the main character’s feelings and physical conditions - depression. The story starts with two different pictures showing Krebs before and after joining the army. The author stages the story of Krebs’s inner conflict to the relationship with his family. Indeed, the author leaves a lot of doubts that make the reader believe Krebs had pain of heart broken while in the war. The author does not directly describe the cruelty of war that Krebs experienced; however, through the conflicts among the characters in the story, readers can assume how the post young soldiers had suffered in the war and understand their trauma by the aftermath.…

"My doom has come upon me; let me not then die ingloriously and without a struggle, but let me first do some great thing that shall be told among men hereafter." This is a quote from Hector from the Iliad. This quote shows how brave and thoughtful Hector was; however, we need to question ourselves, was he really a great hero? If so did he die heroically? Many say he is the true hero of the Iliad and that he did die heroically with his dignity intact. On the other hand, some say his death was ironic and that he did not die heroically at all, but somewhat humiliating. After reading the Iliad I somewhat concede with the latter: Hector was, in fact, not the greatest hero of Iliad and that he died in a humiliating manner.…

    Ungaretti Veglia Analysis

Veglia, written on the 23rd of December 1915, is one of the first poems which focuses on the war’s sufferings. The few lines at the beginning underline the cruelty of the war, but the poet “does not scream, […] does not hate the enemy” (Ferraro, Salerno and Zulati, 2010: 473). Instead, he opposes the death of his friend to love, writing “lettere piene d’amore” (v.13) – letters full of love. The last three verses are emblematic to understand the poet’s will to live; from the risk of death arises an impelling desire for life (Ferraro, Salerno and Zulati, 2010). On the same footing, Sono una creatura – 15th of august 1916 – highlights the concept of life and death in its last three verses: “La morte si sconta vivendo” (v. 11-12-13) refer to the sense of guilt of the living people towards the dead ones (Cortellessa, n.d.). Here, the memory of those who left is represented by the final and obscure “proverbio” – saying – and the sense of inadequacy that the poet feels is given by his survival to death (Cortellessa, n.d.). Finally, Soldati (1918) is a very short poem which includes the fragility of humankind, the nonsense of the war and the precariousness of human existence (Ferraro, Salerno and Zulati, 2010). The word ‘soldati’ – literally translated in ‘soldiers’ – can be replaced with the word ‘men’ because the poem refers to the condition all men are subjected to: no one can escape pain and death (Jesurum, n.d.). Here, as the leaves on trees fall in autumn, so people’s life is ephemeral during any conflict (Cambon, 1976). Once again, the precariousness of life is exalted by the constant presence of…

It is evident that Ernest Hemingway portrays war, in his novel “A Farewell to Arms”, as the ultimate act of destruction, chaos and turmoil. Through contrasts in the landscapes Hemingway is able to depict the ferocity in which war can tear apart nature and through characters such as Henry and Catherine, Passini and Rinaldi he expresses the futility and devastation of war, how it dehumanises people to the point where death becomes a mere statistic and how war changes all those involved, sometimes for the better, but on the most part for the far worst.…
