In the book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Francie Nolan lives in a world where she has trouble finding who she is, but eventually finds a way of discovering who she wants to be. Francie is an eleven-year-old girl living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. You can find Francie sitting on her fire escape reading book, while imagining that she lives in the Tree of Heaven. The narrator says: “An eleven-year-old girl sitting on this fire escape could imagine that she was living in a tree. That's what Francie imagined every Saturday afternoon in summer." (Smith 6). Francie’s society is very small and she doesn’t have much money. Francie didn’t grow up in a community where ‘life is handed on a silver platter’.
One thing that makes up Francie’s world is all the places that she goes. A place that she goes and learns something at is her job. At her job Francie learns that just covering wires, could be someone’s whole life. Francie thinks: “This could be a whole life. You work eight hours a day covering wires to earn money to buy food and to pay for a place to sleep so that you can keep living to come back to cover more wires.” (Smith 364). Another place where she learns something at is home. At home Francie learns that as long as you have your family then no one else matters.
Another thing that makes up Francie’s world is everyone and everything in it. For example when Francie sees the old man with the atrocious at Losher’s she immediately comes to the conclusion that all the babies in the world will end up just like him. Another thing that affects Francie’s life is when she is nearly raped by a man, and she sees his lower area. Francie is surely scarred to life as it touched her leg. One more person that Francie meets that changes her life is Aunt Sissy. Aunt Sissy is very motherly but also sleeps with random guys, which Francie notices.
