Damion opened the door, excited to see his son. “Wow Dyl look how you’ve grown over these past few months!” Dylan gives him a sheepish smile and hugs him. They go into the house and start reminiscing on the school year... Then it came to discussing the report card. “So Dylan, let me see that report card. I want to see how my son has been progressing and making me proud.” Dylan nervously takes out the report card and while handing it to him he says, “Dad about my pre-law course, I...” Damion motions for him to stop talking so that he could be able to read the report card without any distractions. His expression changes from happy to angry in what almost seemed like a second. He looks at Dylan furiously and then asks, “What is this? What happened to your pre-law class, I did not send you to the most prestigious university in the country for you to throw away this opportunity! Why are you taking Music as a major? Didn’t I tell you, I would not be allowing you to throw away your life on this ridiculous entertainment lifestyle?” Dylan tries to explain to him that more than anything; he wanted to become a singer, that law just was not his passion. He had a different dream… But his father wouldn’t listen. “You disgust me. Seventeen years old and you still don’t know how to make good decisions. You are a disappoint to me and your mother would be turning in your grave right now if she realized what a fool you are making of yourself. “That’s why I found the saxophone in the attic the last time I came right? I know you’re secret dad. You were a musician and you loved it, playing the saxophone while mom sang was your passion and because it didn’t work for you, you think that you can prevent me from pursuing my dream.” “How dare you talk to me like that, you don’t know anything about my past, for God sakes, you barely know your mother!” “She wrote everything in her diary while she was sick, you just didn’t have the heart to show me. Everything you ever told me was a lie. I hate you!” Dylan yelled at his father. Get out of my house and don’t return! I want nothing to do with a son who doesn’t strive to be successful with an honorable profession”….

The last conversation Dylan had with his father continuously crossed his mind. He could not believe his father had truly meant those words. All his life, Dylan followed in his father’s footsteps; he never disobeyed him and worked on trying to please him. When his father told him to pursue law he did not refuse. He wanted to make his father proud. Damion Blake, a West Indian Native, who migrated to the United States, the land of opportunity to become successful and accomplish his American Dream. And successful he was; a highly respected Judge. He was known by many for his discipline and his judgment. Damion had high expectations for son as he wanted him to take every advantage of the opportunities he had and to become successful in a job that would have everyone look up to him. However Dylan had different dreams, his heart yearned for the stage, the lights, and the audience. He loved singing and performing in front of others. From the tender age of six, Dylan would find any object and turn it into a mic. He was singing his heart out in church by the age of ten and he had such a great love for it. His mother died from cancer when he was very young, so he was unable to know what it meant to have a mother’s love. He knew that his mother was a singer when she was younger, and for that he never understood why his father made such remarks. After that day, he vowed to himself that he would never let anyone control his decisions, chase after his own dream and live up to his own expectations. He auditioned for a place at Julliard Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts and was accepted. Working hard for the next three years, he learned the techniques in becoming a well singer. He succeeded and graduated with a Master of Music and Graduate Diploma, Voice.

By the age of twenty- four, Dylan was known by many of the well known music industries, his outstanding vocals brought the attention of many managers who wanted to be affiliated with the young singer. He came to a decision in choosing one of the best managers and being signed to one of the best companies. The billboards were filled with his face and his name shone in the lights all around the nation. His albums went platinum and his shows were always sold out.… Dylan sat in practice listening to his choreographer instruct everyone on how they would be dancing on the stage while Dylan would have found his place. He was happy that he was so successful and that he was loved and known by many. However Dylan knew something was missing from his life. His father; he loved him very much. No matter what their past held, he knew his father cared a great deal about him and more than anything, he wanted his father to be a part of his success. Then an idea came to mind! He abruptly stopped the practice and walked to his manager. “I’m going to need a delivery Cyrus, yep, 144-98 160th Ave” Dylan had a plan in mind, a plan that would make his whole dream complete.

Lights! Camera! Action! “Welcome everybody to Madison Square Gardens’ Annual Summer Concert!” says the emcee ecstatically. “Tonight we are going to have a very special performer on our stage; he is a young performer who always knows how to bring a good crowd to these events. Please welcome Dylan Blake to the stage!” The audience screams at the hearing of his name. As Dylan appears on the stage, his heart beats furiously, so many thoughts run through his mind. Did his father even come? Did he even care? Was he going to miss a lyric in the song? Dylan had never been so edgy in his life. As he emerged from beneath the stage, he took his stance that he was appointed, he began singing. Everything began to fall into place after that. The rhythm and the beat made him feel so amazing; it was as if it was just him and the mic as one. He poured his heart out and produced a wonderful song that grabbed his audience and gave them goose bumps… After the concert was over, Dylan searched the audience for his father. He spun around in circles for what seemed forever. Then his eyes appeared on a man sitting in his seat, his face buried in his hands. He walked over to the man with hope and sure enough when he touched the man, and he lifted his head, it was his father. “Dad...” was all he could say, tears filled his eyes and his father got up and hugged him so tightly. “ I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry” Damion repeated to his son. He never thought that Dylan could have had the potential to become something so great in the music industry. He regretted ever having his son leave his life. He had so much to make up for now. “I should have never doubted you Dyl, you’ve become such a successful young man, I should’ve let you followed your own dream from the beginning. It’s just that when I never attained my dream, I never wanted the same to happen to you.” “Dad I love you”. Dylan and his father embraces some more. They were both relieved to have been reunited and this time they were each other’s support. Damion learned to let the dream live and not hinder it. Dylan learned not ever let anyone get in the way of him working towards his dreams and achieving them.
