“A Worn Path”
The short story “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty provides a very meaningful theme. The theme is shown through the main character, who's name is Phoenix Jackson. She will go through any obstacle in the way, to pursue the goal that she has set for herself to complete in a day. Phoenix may be an older woman, but she does not allow her age or the fact of being a colored woman make any difference to the goal she has set herself to complete. The recognized motive to completing her journey, seems to be her love for her grandson and to help him. Phoenix makes her way through all the obstacles, does not allow social class differences bother her, and Phoenix is not afraid to ask or take what she feels she needs.
Phoenix is walking a very long path and is determined to reach her destination no matter the obstacles in her way. The path she takes goes up a hill and then down the hill. This hill is a symbol for when she starts struggling, reaches her struggle, and lastly when phoenix is over coming her struggle of this journey. For example, in the beginning of her journey there are animals that run in front of her and she tells them the need to move out of her way (pg.288). Then shortly after Phoenix’s path requires her to walk over a log surrounded by water. She closes her eyes and walks right over the log to the other side (pg.289). After most of Phoenix’s journey in the woods, she encounters a hunter who tells her to turn around. Phoenix is not afraid of the hunter and he tries to scare her off with his gun. Phoenix shows no fear to him and his gun when he pointed it in her face. She was only afraid of the wild dog that was running lose in the woods (pg.290-291). Phoenix makes her way in to the town which is mostly based of social class through the description.
Phoenix does not allow social class differences bother or effect her goal to reach the end of her journey or hurt her ego. For instance, she
