Painted by the frosts, some a uniform clear bright yellow, or red, or crimson, as if their spheres had regularly revolved, and enjoyed the influence of the sun on all sides alike,—some with the faintest pink blush imaginable,—some brindled with deep red streaks like a cow, or with hundreds of fine blood-red rays running regularly from the stem-dimple to the blossom-end, like meridional lines, on a straw-colored ground,—some touched with a greenish rust, like a fine lichen, here and there, with crimson blotches or eyes more or less confluent and fiery when wet,—and others gnarly, and freckled or peppered all over on the stem side with fine crimson spots on a white ground, as if accidentally sprinkled from the brush of Him who paints the autumn leaves.…

CHARLIE starts to run aimlessly in the woods with hazy vision. He doesn't know where he is going. All of a sudden, he trips over a branch. As he tries to get up, the branch wraps around his leg like a snake and holds him with a tight grip. Screaming and panicking, more branch roots arise the ground and grab each of CHARLIE'S limbs, wrapping around him. One even wraps around his mouth to silence him. As the branch roots have finally wrapped fully around CHARLIE'S body, he slowly then starts to be dragged beneath the dirt. Before he is pulled all the way underneath, he see's HEATHER standing right above him.…
Hurston made Janie’s life comparable to that of a great tree.(25) And within that tree the leaves signified if she suffered, she enjoyed , or basically how that part of her life…
Physically, she is a frail, old woman. She wears a red rag over her head, and carries a thin, small cane, which is fashioned from an umbrella. With her blue eyes, she walks toward town in her long, darkly striped dress with an apron of equal length. Her skin is full of “numberless branching wrinkles”.…
Andy ventures out on a hunting trip with her father, her father’s friend, Charlie and Charlie’s son, Mac. Not every character in the story signifies something special, but a few do. Andy, the protagonist is a young, eight year old girl who loves to spend time with her father. On the way to the hunting site, Andy thinks about her mother washing dishes and thinks to herself, “She is there, and we are here” (514). The thought that she is with the boys and not at home with her mother satisfies her. Although Andy does not seem very fond of Mac and Charlie, she enjoys the time away with her father. Her love for the woods is evident.…
A Worn Path is a short story written by Eudora Welty. The story is about an elderly, Phoenix Jackson, who goes on a little trip to retrieve her grandsons medicine. A Worn Path was written when towns and cities were segregated. Segregation caused many obstacles for colored people. In this story, The Worn Path is like life back in the 1900’s for colored people, it was filled with struggles for African Americans like Phoenix Jackson.…
and throat were entirely exposed, / And her breasts and her back were also remarkably bare"…
The primary theme of the story is that a good person (like Phoenix) will do her duty and fulfill her obligations no matter how hard it is to do so. She really has a hard time getting to town, but she will do it because her grandson needs her – she is all the family he has.…

The forests between our house and the full-banked river were very beautiful. The wild cherry and the dogwood were in full bloom. The squirrels were leaping from tree to tree, and the birds were making a various melody.” She truly appreciated every aspect of her time with her father, the imagery shows that.…
The text feels the theme of the story A Worn Path is about sacrificial love. I believe that while short, the story has multiple themes. I believe another theme is the era of the story itself. Not enslaved, not free. The story examines a woman who was alive at the "surrender", now living in what seems the 1930's. She is a lasting symbol of an era 65 years removed. The name the woman Phoenix (the symbol of resurrection) indicates a theme of her constantly battling against the world on a daily basis.…
A young woman named Beauty stares out the window at snow gleaming in the dusk. We are told that her skin resembles the snow because it possesses the same "inner light" that seems to emanate from within. The snow is unspoiled by footprints, "white and unmarked as a spilled bolt of bridal satin." The young woman worries for her father's safety because he said he would be home before dark, and he cannot call her because he phones are down.…
"She walked with measured steps, draped in striped and fringed cloths, treading the earth proudly with a slight jingle and flash of barbarous ornaments. She carried her head high, her hair was done in the shape of a helmet, and she had brass leggings to the knees... She was savage and superb, wild-eyed and magnificent; there was something ominous and stately in her deliberate process... the colossal body of the fecund and mysterious life seemed to look at her".…
