A Retelling of The Book Thief
Before she left to go play, Hans said to her: "Liesel, for your book, just remember to write your story." Still discouraged, Liesel exited out of the house, but she was still pondering over what Hans had said and. While initially walking to the middle to Himmel Street, she thought about her life since she came there. The Book Thief thought about she clung to the gate of the Hubermanns' house, refusing to leave her former life behind. She remembered how before she came to Himmel Street, she did not know how to read, and she recalled Hans stayed awake with her every night to help learn the alphabet and how to read. Liesel reminisced about nights spent in the basement with Max and how they shared their nightmares. She remembered how Max showed the injustice and cruelty of Hitler and how he taught her the true power and impact of words. Slightly waking up out of her trance, Liesel realized that she had walked past Himmel Street and was at Amper River. Looking at the river, it reminded her when Rudy jumped into the freezing waters to save her book (The Whistler), one of the first book that she stole. She recalled how Rudy and she would travel to 8 Grand Strasse and steal books from the mayor's house. Standing by the river, Liesel realized that everything that has happened to her and everything she has done since she came to the Hubermanns is her story. She saw that her story is about how she became the Book Thief.

    Stealing her first book opened Liesel up to a world filled with words and grammar. As she stared at The Grave Digger’s Handbook, “touching the print inside, she had no idea what it was saying.”(38). Because Liesel could not read or write, as a nine-year-old, she was forced to attend school with children who just started learning the alphabet.     Liesel realizes how words can be good and evil. She learns that words and reading can bring families and communities together. When she is reading at the shelter, “Young kids [are] soothed by her voice, and everyone else saw visions of the whistler running from the crime scene... they [are] distracted now, by the girl with the book” (Zusak 381-382). When she reads at the shelter during the bomb raid, it gives the audience a sense of comfort and distraction. Because of her reading in the shelter, Frau Holtzapfel stops her grudge with the Hubermanns, and asks Liesel to read for her. Liesel realizes that words also have a good side, where the words have the power to bring people together. Liesel also comprehends that Adolf Hitler uses words to manipulate German citizens to carry out horrific facts, which cause a lot of deaths and suffering. So Liesel decides to create her own novel, so she can spread the good in words. Her last line ends with, “I have hated words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right” (Zusak 528). This shows how the power of words has impacted Liesel in good and bad ways. She shows that she wants to use the words for good, rather than evil.
