Character Analysis
A character can change or develop in a story thousands of different ways. Some characters stumble upon to what goes on in the story and others are born into the story. The second is the case for Mariam of the story “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled hosseini. She was born into life out of wedlock, for this she is known as a harami ‘or bastard’. Being a harami she was always talked down to and treated like she was nothing. Along with this she is shy and amazingly loving at the same time.
The first Characteristic of Mariam is that she felt like she herself was worth nothing. Her mother was the main cause of this because she constantly put Mariam down. Even when she was a little girl her mother had said, “"You are a clumsy little harami. This is my reward for everything I've endured. An heirloom-breaking, clumsy little harami" (Hosseini 4). Mariam’s mother had blamed her for everything that had gone wrong. Also on top of that she really wants to be accepted into her father’s family, but he is ashamed of her. After she ran away her other committed suicide, and Mariam tried to go to her dads house but was told he was not home and while she was leaving she saw him in the window. “Mariam kept thinking of his face in the upstairs window. He let her sleep on the street. On the street. Mariam cried lying down.” (Hosseini 35). Just that alone would make anyone feel like they do not even want to live, as if they were nothing. On top of it the kind of social awkwardness that was created from that kind of thing must have been awful. It must have been a huge shot to her self-confidence. This brings it spiraling in to the next of Mariam’s outstanding characteristics. The second characteristic of Mariams that really stood out was her over whelming shyness. Mariams shyness ended up affecting her whole life. Like when a suitor came asking for her hand
