Fundamental
First of all, why we have to make BDA? Balance day adjustments are therefore required to ensure the financial statements portray a correct picture on the firm’s financial performance and financial position. We have to recognize all transaction occurring in that accounting period, irrespective of whether cash has been received or paid. The ultimate objective of adjusting entries is to ensure that the revenues (income) earned in the accounting period are matched by all costs incurred for that same accounting period (Monash College, 2011).
Prepayment
There are two types of adjusting entries, prepayments and accruals. Prepayment is a payment in advance of the period to which it pertains. What this mean is, this category of adjustments aligns recorded revenues (income) and costs with appropriate accounting periods. For example, there are situations where cash is received before goods and services are provided to customers or situations where cash has been paid in advance for costs of operation and which relate to future accounting periods. Prepayments divided into two sections, which are prepaid expenses and unearned revenue. Prepaid expenses is type of assets that shown on a balance sheet as a result of business payments for goods and services to be received in the near future. While prepaid expenses are initially recorded as assets, their value is expensed over time as the benefit is receive something of value in the near future.

“Adjusting entries ensure that revenue recognition and matching principles are followed (Kimmel P. 3.4).” Revenue recognition means that revenue should be recognized at the time the revenue was earned. Matching principle is when the expense that was put into making that revenue is recognized when the revenue occurs. Adjusting entries are important because when making a trial balance at any time it is not a for sure that all the entries are up to date so adjusting is required. Adjusting entries are either made in the deferrals section or accruals. Deferrals are when cash is given or received but the work for the cash has not been done. Accruals are when cash is when work is done but cash is not sent or received. Adjusting…

The steps of accounting cycles are revenues, expenditures, conversion/ production, financing, fixed assets, and financial reporting. Revenues most often occur as the result of the selling of a service or product. These transactions are recorded in the form of cash receipts and sales orders. Expenditures are a result of the materials and labor need to generate revenues. For example a dry cleaning business would need certain chemicals, bags and hangers for cleaned clothes, and employees to operate the business. Conversion represents the production or the good or service sold by the company. In other terms the time/ cost to produce and market the good or service. Financing is also known as and outstanding debt, such as stocks or any outstanding bonds. The fixed asset details the purchase, disposition, and depreciation of company assets. Once all journal entries have been posted and all accounts closed a trial balance is prepared and is used to identify errors and eventually prepare the financial reporting for the company. Accounting systems have become more automated and the need for human intervention is becoming more limited. Automation of these systems does allow for increased efficiency and accuracy and has allowed manual accounting task to be performed more quickly. Human intervention is necessary though to ensure the data being entered is correct. Human intervention can also help to identify errors that may have been made in the initial inputting of information. As technology evolves it is…

The importance of knowing how to adjust entries is to ensure that the revenue and matching principles are followed (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, 2009). It is necessary because when a trial balance is prepared, the information may not be current. The adjustments need to be made when financial statements are prepared because it is counter-productive to record some events on a daily basis. The entries affected by adjusting entries are prepaid expenses, insurance, depreciation, and supplies (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, 2009).…

Companies use a statement of cash flows because it shows where cash came from and how it was used. The other main financial reports only provide a limited insight into the cash transactions of the company. While the other main reports utilize the accrual accounting basis, the statement of cash flows changes the accrual basis using the direct or indirect method. The indirect method is primarily used, however both are acceptable under generally accepted accounting principles. The statement of cash flows is divided into three sections and shown in the report in the following order. Operating activities is reported first, followed by investing activities, and finally financing activities. Operating activities deals with each transaction that involves both revenues and expenses. This category is considered important because operating activities are the best predictor of a company’s ability to generate future cash. This obviously is important information for investors as well as creditors when evaluating a company’s ability to grow and move forward. Investors can make educated guesses regarding the future cash flows based on the statement of cash flows better than viewing the other financial reports that utilize the accrual accounting basis. Investing activities include the transactions to purchase, sell, or dispose of company property. Loans and debt collection are also included in the investing activities with company plant and equipment. Investors can view the statement of cash flows to see if the company has sufficient cash on hand to pay stockholder dividends and meet future demands. Finally, financing activities includes receiving cash from stockholders, buying back company stock, and paying dividends.…

When the organization provides a service it will then record the income earned. The same process applies when a purchase is made, and it will record the expense. This method is helpful for an organization that wants to keep track of income and expenses as they occur. With the modified accrual basis, the income earned is recorded just like in full accrual accounting however; when an expense occurs, it will only be recorded when it has been paid. This method allows for more financial flexibility since expenses are not recorded until…

If our businesses were to choose an accrual basis accounting method, they would record revenue when the products and services are provided whether payment was made or a future payment was agreed upon. Expenses would then be recorded in the same accounting period that the revenue it is related to is recorded. When income is recorded when earned, assets are created such as accounts receivable and liabilities that become assets such as unearned income. When expenses are recorded when incurred, liabilities are created such as accounts payable and assets that become liabilities such as deferred expenses. The merchandise purchased for resale or the materials purchased for the use in the manufacturing of products would be recorded as current assets so unlike the cash method, an inventory entry would be needed. Opposite of the cash method, the accrual method does not portray an excellent record of cash flow but, because it does record receivables, payables, unearned income and deferred expenses, it portrays an accurate record for profit reporting. To record cash transactions, the company would need to supplement the standard financial statements with a Statement of Cash Flow.…

Circling the idea of stories relating much to another story is clearly demonstrated in the transfer of character comparisons in Macbeth by William Shakespeare with “A Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe is very evident. In the two stories, both of the main characters are not that different then each other; they are both built upon the same characteristics and lead forward by their thriving ambitions. Firstly, in the play before Macbeth’s eyes appears a dagger. This dagger represents much more than death; he seeing this in his mind was what led Macbeth into the room of King Duncan. He was much confused with Banquo proclaiming his loyalty for the King, as he stood there asking “Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle towards my hand? Come, let me clutch thee/ Mine eyes are made the fools o’th’other senses/ the bell invites me…That summons thee to heaven or to hell (II. i. 32-66). In the short story the main character’s last straw to go forth and finally commit the murder, was the hard beating of the old man’s heart. He/she stood there waiting “but the beating grew louder, louder! I thought the heart would burst. And now the anxiety seized me…the old man’s hour had come! (2). These are very similar scenarios in two different stories; in both the story and the play the protagonists both have a goal and this is like a final string for them, they both imagine these items/senses but yet these made up objects had such a big impact on the protagonist to make them actually commit it. These both revolve around the idea of murder overcoming all senses. Secondly, in the play Macbeth gains confidence through the pervasion of the 3 witches and this leads to his demise. He listens to the witch stating about the forest falling “That will never be: Who can impress the forest, bid the tree unfix his earthbound root? / Macbeth shall live the lease of nature” (IV. i. 93-102). Also in the…
