The main killer among teens is not drugs or murder. It's self-inflicted. Self inflicted murder to themselves also known as suicide. The rates among teen suicide are rising at a steady rate. Girls attempt sucide twice as much as boys and comtemplate it. Girls attempt it by cutting themselves or overdosing on over the counter drugs. Boys die from suicide though about four times more than girls. The reasoning behind this is using more lethal ways. They either jump off heights or use a firearm. Adolescence is the time between childhood and adulthood. Facing many changes and obstacles along the way. There are many pressures of how each teen is suppose to act and some find it difficult to live up to. Also young people with a mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or insomnia are at higher risk for suicidal thoughts.
Factors that increase risk of suicide
· A previous suicide attempt
· Family history of depression or suicide
· Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
· Lack of a support network, poor relationships with parents or peers, and feelings of social isolation
· Dealing with bisexuality or homosexuality in an unsupportive family or community or hostile school environment Signs that a teen might be contemplating suicide vary from dropping hints to friends and family. Leaving goodbyes to people they care about and then pulling away from friends and family. They might also take part in risky behavior. The crisis is ending up losing a loved one or a child. Feeling guilty that you weren't there enough for them. The impact it has on the family is an internal scar that most of the time will never go away. Many teens are ignored and shoved away being told that they are just doing these things for attention. Many parents need to understand and obeserve a teen going through a state of depression. Often if a child has gone through a previous crisis it can result in this crisis. Teen suicide is very important factor
