Aladdin Receives A Standing Ovation During its First Night On Broadway

Disney’s “Aladdin”, a new musical comedy based on the 1992 Academy Award-winning animated film, began preview performances at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre on February 26 and will officially open on March 20. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, the show features music by Tony Award and Oscar winner Alan Menken, with lyrics by Oscar and Tony Award winner Howard Ashman along with Oscar winner Tim Rice. Tony Award winner, Casey Nicholaw directed and choreographed this new enchanting production.

Aladdin stars Adam Jacobs in the title role, Courtney Reed as Jasmine, James Monroe Iglehart as Genie and Tony Award nominee Jonathan Freeman as Jafar. Freeman, who voiced his character in the original film, returns in this live action stage production. Although this Broadway adaptation kept around some old friends including Iago, (Don Darryl Rivera,) they also added some new ones.

Aladdin gains three trusty pals, Babkak, Kassim and Omar (played by Brian Gonzales, Brandon O'Neill and Jonathan Schwartz.) The trio received a new song just for them, titled “Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim.” The song explains how no matter what, the boys will always have Aladdin’s back. Even though “Al” gains some new friends, his iconic monkey sidekick Abu, is sadly left out.

Besides the character changes, the play differs from the movie in many other respects. The classic songs “One Jump Ahead”, “Friend Like Me”, “Prince Ali”, and “A Whole New World” were rightfully included, but with the addition of new songs the play really came together. Also, some major scenes from the movie didn’t make the cut.

Speaking of “A Whole New World,” that’s exactly where the show took me. From the amazing architecture and design of the set to the 337 perfectly rhinestoned costumes, to the fist clenching sword fights, and the extravagant dance numbers this cast of 35 sure

The changes in the movie are deeply flamboyant. One of the biggest changes is the main event for the cause of the Salem Trials. In the movie, the audience sees the girls running to the woods very surreptitiously, practicing witchcraft, in the play it was mentioned through dialogue in Act 1. In addition to changes, in the play Reverend Hale states that he signed 72 death warrants, but in the movie he signed 17 death warrants. There was only one deletion that I saw that was very noticeable. In the play when John Proctor was accused, he snached his warrant out of his wife Elizabeth's hand, but in the play he never showed any anger towards Elizabeth. Further…

One of the biggest differences between the play and the movie is the dramatization of everything, they show all seances with something that the play could not deliver by itself. One example of this is the opening scene, we see Abby violently swinging around a dead chicken and then smash its neck open, and proceed to drink the blood. This violent display was show in the play to be more calmly done. A whole other difference is the placement of the scene, the movie having the whole dancing in the forest scene at the very beginning of the movie, whilst the dancing in the forest portion of the play is learned about more and more through the girls talking about it after the fact.…

The film is an appropriation rather than an adaptation because elements of the original play's plot and characters have been used in a different setting to create new meaning and explore the themes in a different way, in this case a parody of the original, rather than using the same story and characters and presenting it in a different frame, such as a novel instead of a play.…

It was a full house with standing room only. It was obvious that the audience was mostly parents and other assorted family members. I found that their excitement was catching and also a bit of an irritant as they clapped after every scene. I am more familiar with an experienced crowd that claps only at the end of a production. But we are dealing with an all child cast, so I somewhat understand the exuberance. The set was nice without being overly complicated. I was somewhat disappointed in the costumes because they made me feel that I was at a school performance, rather than a professional show. The sound and lighting at times were not in rhythm with the actors as they entered and exited stage. This caused a delay in scenes at times, as they let the music finish before diming the lights for a scene change. This left the stage empty with full lights at…

One of the most famous plays ever to hit Broadway, “The Phantom of the Opera” written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is a classic that no one can deny to be amazing. Its brilliant plot of a distorted musical genius that haunts an opera house in Paris and unconsciously helps a beautiful woman with her singing career and falls in love with her can seize anyone who watches it. Also, the dazzling music and setting launch the audience back into the time in which this incredible play takes place. But now a new version of this wonderful play has been created in the form of a movie that gives it a bit more spunk and pulls the audience, even more, into a grueling love triangle between a beautiful young actress and two men who would fight to the death for her affection.…

Costume Designer Bruce Goodrich did a such a great job picking the costume for every cast member because the color of every clothing was really good on their skin tone and the fit suited them perfectly. Lighting Designer John Favreau made the stage looked realistic. Even though it was a stage play it really felt like I was at the house with the cast. There was not much of lighting changed, but the scenery looked a lot better because of the way the lighting was set up. Sound Designer Kyle Alcaino did every single sound on time. Even though I did not notice much sound track throughout the play, I think that every time I hear the sound it was perfect for the scene. Makeup/Hair Designer Kaylee Truenow made the cast looked really smooth and perfect. Even though it was not a lot of work for make up like Into the Woods required, it still looked natural and it suited each character…

According to West’s Encyclopedia of American Law, between 1990 and 1999, a well-known advocate for physician assisted suicide, Jack Kevorkian helped 130 patients end their lives. There are also some minor changes in the script of the movie that are different than the novel. Such thing include some scene like when Schmendrick was invited to dinner by the mayor of the town he was visiting; where Cullys’ outlaws came in and took him. This was different in the movie; the whole scene was cut out and shortened. In the movie the outlaws were traveling through the forest and saw Schmendrick and grabbed him up to bring to Cully. This…

In the film "Hook", Robin Williams plays the fictional character Peter Banning. "Hook" is another look in to the popular story of Peter Pan. This new look into Peter Pan is interesting even for someone who has never seen the original movie. This childishness in itself is a hidden messages, as are many key ideas throughout the movie, which will have many views looking. The playwright of this Broadway show comes from a movie that was presented in 1964. I believe that the playwright wanted to establish everything just like the movie. Growing up as a child, My sister and I had an obsession with Mary Poppins and would watch the movie all the time. To this day, she sings songs from the movie to my two year old niece. The Broadway show was no different from the movie, which made me really happy. It disappoints me that sometimes shows are different from the actual movie even though they are originated from the movie. They definitely accomplished trying to turn the movie into an actual live show and being able to do that with all the details from the movie is amazing.…
