1.(a) The text I have studied is Sive by John. B. Keane. From studying this text , I strongly dislike the social setting. In this essay I will propose the reasons why.
The first reason I dislike the social setting in Sive is that it is a poverty stricken area in Ireland. The Glavin family are willing to sell their niece, Sive for 200 pounds to Sean Dota. This shows that the family are struggling to make ends meet as they are willing to go to extreme lengths to make money. Mena says several times throughout the text that they have been ‘ scraping by’ for long enough. This conveys that the people in Sive are poor and this is a reason why I dislike the social setting.
Another reason why I dislike the setting in Sive is that it is too rural. I live in a busy city and I can`t imagine living in a quiet town like the one described in Sive. The population is very low and everybody knows each other’s business. For example, the news of Sean Dota marrying Sive was known by everyone in the village . Mena describes her living conditions as ‘ four cows at the top of a mountain and a few acres of bog’. This quote shows how rural the place is and is a main reason why I dislike the social setting.
Finally, I dislike the social setting in Sive because the characters are untrustworthy. Throughout the story the characters betray each other. We see Mena,Mike and Thomasheen Sean Rua go behind Sive`s back to arrange an inappropriate marriage for her. This is the main storyline and they do not have Sive`s best interests at heart. Another example of betrayal is when Mike Glavin does not obey his mother to pass on the letter to Sive without reading it. These examples of betrayal make me dislike the social setting of the play.
As seen above in the various examples, I dislike the social setting in Sive as it is poor, remote and full of betrayal.

The second text I have studied is Casablanca (C) directed by Michael Curitz. In this essay , I will discuss
