Cures may have killed more people than the diseases themselves. The public developed a very skeptical attitude towards regular doctors. In the early 19th century, the do it yourself attitude of many Americans was popular. These people freely gave medical advice, emphasized the participant of the patient in his or her own treatment. However, other "medical treatments" were available also. Probably snake…

As we travel with time our health conditions take a leap at the same time. Medical advancements occurred rapidly after the 1950s, such as immunizations, antibiotics, and improved surgical techniques. (Duke University Library, 1987) Although these are the advancements that are seen most commonly, there were also some medical emergencies prior to 1950 that eventually led to advancements in medical practice. Before the Scientific Revolution, medicine was an unsophisticated practice in the European Continent. As a result of this medical ignorance diseases and plagues prospered in this region. Such prosperous diseases include the most well known killer in history, the black death; otherwise known as the bubonic plague.…
Have you ever been sick before? If so, what had cured you in those times of dread? It was medecine! During the Age of Exploration, many explorers found herbs and plants such as quinine to cure many diseases. Without the Age of Exploration, you might have been dead by now. For example, in the 1300s there was the horrible Black Death that killed one-third of Europe. The black death could be easily cured today because of medecine. That’s all because of the conquest and the ‘discovery’ of the New World. Also, in the late 1800s, the Panama Canal was built. It was first constructed by the French then, finished by the Americans. During these constructions, many people died from yellow fever but, much more died from malaria. On the other hand, quinine was just recently discovered in the 1820s before the end of the constructions. Quinine saved a lot of the workers lives. If not for quinine, much more people than the 500 dead will be dead. That is why I believe that medicine was good for Europe not bad.…
Greece’s culture is high context, which means that for the Greek culture the meaning of messages is determined by the context or the environment. Most of their communication is implicit. The members of the culture are skilled in reading non-verbal cues. Their interactions do not need explanation because of their common history. This is the reason why Greeks will interrupt what someone is saying while they try to figure out what is means. This is a common aspect of Greek communication. Greeks tend to speak quite loudly and with a lot of emotion. At times it may appear as if they are yelling and annoyed but it is most likely a normal tone of voice. Direct eye contact is expected it is viewed as a sign of interest and respect towards the speaker.…
When we hear the word medicine, doesn't that imply it is a remedy to cure a sickness or disease? Medicine is used to restore our faith, hope, and most importantly, our lives. For hundreds of years, medicine has been known to cure many people including those who had barely an ounce of life left. However, as the Middle Ages progressed, medieval medicine became popular among people even though it was killing them instead of healing them.…
Greece was the birthplace of Western Civilization because its culture became the embodiment for the other western civilizations. The tale of the ancient Greek civilization showed an immense painful history of foreign supremacy. But their civilization was built on solid foundation and led by powerful leaders that created values, norms and customs that are still being practiced and observed by many modern societies. This is the reason why the Greek civilization continued to flourish, remembered, celebrated throughout the entire world. One of the factors that can be considered as an important part of the Greek civilization development is the geography. The geography of Greece had a very overwhelming impact on every aspect like its political, cultural,…
The history of physical education and sports reflects people's attitudes about physical activity. From prehistoric times, because survival was related to physical stamina and to people's ability to find food, no separate physical fitness programs were needed. Gradually, ancient societies like Greece, and Rome adopted physical education as part of military training. As the more developed societies came to value the scholarly life, physical education lost favor. Many developed countries have had to strike a balance between physical and intellectual interests.…
