Anterior Cruciate Ligament (A.C.L) Tear Essay Example
Ligaments are tough, non-stretchable fibers that hold bones together. Damage to cruciate ligaments, which crisscross the knee to give it stability, is one of the most common sports injuries. The "tear" occurs from changing direction rapidly, slowing down from running, or landing from a jump improperly. The A.C.L tear is one injury that worries athletes in all sports at all levels because of its devastating effects. People ages 15-25 that participate in basketball and other sports that require pivoting are especially at risk. General Information "The anterior cruicate ligament is a strong band that arises from the posterior middle part of the lateral condyle of the femur, it passes anteriorly and inferiorly between the condyle, and is attached to the depression in front of the intercondylar eminence of the tibia (Mosby‘s page. 105)." The tear of the A.C.L is described as a partial or complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. The A.C.L. does not repair by itself. It is so important to an athlete in most sports because an athlete has to be able to rotate the knee in specific directions. The tear happens more frequently in soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Athletes who started participating in a sport while they were young have a greater chance of sustaining a tear. Women are more susceptible to this injury than men. Theories for this include hormonal, environmental, and biomechanical factors. "Women‘s muscles react differently in landing. Doctors say that women land with straighter legs than men do; thus, they pass their shock to the A.C.L. resulting in a tear. Environmental factors are shoes and playing surfaces." (Patrick, Dick) Causes and Symptoms The most common way to tear the A.C.L is by violently twisting the knee. This can happen with or without contact. Most people say they hear "a pop". It can occur when you‘re slowing down from running, planting and suddenly changing direction, or hyperextending the knee. "When this

--The 4 ligaments of the knee are the ACL, LCL, MCL, and PCL. The Anterior cruciate ligament is located in the center of the knee. This ligament controls rotation and forward movement. Lateral collateral ligament is located on the outside side of the knee, giving stability to the outer knee. Medial collateral ligament is located on the inside of the knee, giving stability to the inner knee. Posterior cruciate ligament is located in the center of the knee, and controls backward movement of the tibia.…

Now this surgery is a very difficult and long process operation. Because there are three ligaments ruptured you have options on how they can be repaired. For the ACL, your options for the graft are the patellar tendon autograft, hamstring tendon autograft, quadriceps tendon autograft, and allografts. The reason these options are considered is because in the past doctors used to just sew the ACL back together, but didn’t have a high recovery rate. For the meniscus you have three options. Meniscectomy, which is the removal of the torn section of the meniscus, a suture repair of the torn section, or an implantation of a cadaver meniscus. The MCL is very unique, unless it is a very severe tear, the MCL will heal on its own once the torn ligaments are repaired. The knee will once again be stabilized after surgery and the MCL will begin to heal. This surgery is arthroscopic meaning that it is done using a small camera inserted into your joint area with a picture being presented on a screen to help surgeons see. The most crucial damage of the ligaments is the ACL and does require reconstructive…

Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction surgery, which is its medical name, is a grafting procedure in which doctors take tendons from another part of the body, like the forearm, hamstring, hip or knee and replace the ligament in the elbow with the other grafted ligament. Two holes are drilled into the arm bones and the replacement “ligament” is woven between the two holes like a figure 8. This injury is caused by a repetitive throwing or over head motion such as throwing a baseball or swinging a tennis racquet.…

Most of the tears in this area can be repaired with different treatment protocol. The preferable treatment for these tears includes surgical procedures. On the other hand, when a tear is small, conservative treatment is preferred. When rotator cuff tears occur in young athletes, the position and sport the athlete plays is taken into consideration. A linebacker for a football team is more likely to receive a surgical procedure when compared to a soccer…

Some common efforts are resting, icing, and arm rehabilitation. If these efforts are unsuccessful, surgery will be necessary to return to a competitive level (Erickson). UCL injuries requiring surgery are often caused by overuse and bad mechanics. With overuse occurring often in many adolescents, pitch rules and limits have started to take effect in leagues to prevent as many overuse injuries as possible. Overuse is one of the leading causes of injury and is a typical problem in younger athletes who play for teams with one standout pitcher. Overuse will often lead to microtrauma injuries, and when pitched on, these microtrauma injuries lead to larger scale injuries and larger problems (Andrews 54-56). UCL injuries can also be caused by repetitive stress on the elbow, usually caused by throwing. The injury occurs when the ligament loosens and stretches to a point where the bones creating the elbow joint are no longer held closely tightly (Ansorge). Elbow injuries often have symptoms that are quite recognizable. Symptoms are often pain and fatigue in the elbow, and can be recognized early if pain does not reside after stretching a few warm up throws (Andrews 59). Other side effects to a UCL injury can be a tightness in the elbow and a tingling in both the ring and pinky fingers of the throwing hand (Ansorge). Tommy John Surgery would be used to get rid of these symptoms, and to eventually restore the stability of the elbow joint that was causing the problems in the first place. The ultimate goal is to get an athlete to where he was, and to eliminate the reason for him not being able to throw in the first place (Ulnar). Before the surgery, the injury must first be diagnosed with either a physical exam, x-ray, or MRI revealing any damage to the ligament that would require a surgical procedure (Ansorge). After diagnosis, the surgical procedure will begin.…

Lacrosse is a sport that is becoming more popular around the world. Lacrosse is a fast paced game that requires a lot of movement. In some cases, injury can occur. A common injury that occurs during a lacrosse game is tearing your ACL. ACL stands for anterior cruciate ligament. ACL is one of the four main ligaments you have in your knee. While playing lacrosse, you tend to make very quick movements, which can cause this tear to happen. Without this ligament, your knee will be unstable and surgery is essential. ACL tears in athletes happen far too often. The long recovery process is what motivates athletes to become a better player when they get back on the field.…

The anterior cruciate ligament is one of four major ligaments’ that make the knee work. Let’s take a look inside the knee to see what it consists of. The knee joint has many components like bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. We are going to focus more on ligament’s that make up the knee. All four of the following ligaments have a specific job in order for the knee to work properly. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) runs along the outside of the knee preventing it from bending out to far. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) runs along the outside of the knee, preventing it from bending in to far. The next two ligaments depend upon each other to do their job correctly. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is in the middle of the knee, it prevents the shin bone from sliding out in front of the thigh bone. Lastly is the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) it forms an “X” shape with the ACL in the middle of the knee, it prevents the shin bone from sliding backwards under the thigh bone. As you can see these ligaments play very important roles in the knee.…

A few hours later when I went to the hospital, I discovered that I had torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Initially, I did not know what to expect from the situation, but I came to realize how much it would affect my life. The ACL functions as a ligament that connects the tibia and the femur. It provides stability in the knee, and with this injury, I could not participate in competitive soccer for 10 months. To undergo this painful experience at such a young age is extremely difficult; however, I chose to embrace the situation rather than let it destroy me. I could no longer play the sport I loved, but I could not change anything about that; I could only control my attitude in this predicament. I went above and beyond at every physical therapy appointment, no matter how strenuous/painful the workouts were. Times frequently came…
