Away From Her - A Film Review
The film Away From Her, is a screenplay adaptation from the short story Bear came over the Mountain by Alice Munro. The story focuses around the relationship of Fiona and Grant, an Ontario couple married over 40 years. The couple is forced to face that fact that Fionas forgetfulness is actually Alzheimers disease. After Fiona wanders away and is found after being lost, she realizes that she can no longer live at home. Fiona has too much self-pride for herself, and too much pity for Grant, to subject him to her deteriorating mind. She makes the decision on her own to check into a comfortable nearby nursing home. The nursing home they choose has a no-visitors policy for the first thirty days of the patients stay, to let them adjust to their new settings. When Grant visits Fiona after the first month of her staying in the nursing home, he finds out that not only has she forgotten him, but Fiona has transferred her feelings to another man. The other man is Aubrey, a wheelchair bound mute patient at the nursing home. His wife Marian later moves Aubrey out of the home. As the distance between Grant and Fiona increases, Grant must sacrifice his own happiness for Fiona. This moving story, was told from the perspective of the director and screenplay writer, Sarah Polley. I believe that she used the films focus of Alzheimer, humour and intimacy between the characters to show an honest relationship of a forty-year marriage.

Objectively the film is the struggle of relationship with a women suffering from Alzheimers. I think that the director, Sarah Polley used role of Alzheimers in the film as a metaphor for how memory plays out in a long relationship: what we choose to remember what we choose to forget. At a point in the film, where Grant drove Fiona, we get a glimmer that their marriage wasnt all like it seemed to be. Fiona mentions a younger woman, a student of Grants who somehow had an impact of their marriage. Although Fiona doesnt come out right and say it, the film

In the beginning of the movie there is an older man reading a book to a woman who we later figure out is Noah and Allie. Allie has Alzheimer’s disease and he is reading her the story of their love. To me this part of the movie lead me to believe that in this point in their lives they were in the last and final stage of Erikson’s theory integrity vs. despair which happens during late adulthood. Mainly Noah was looking back at his life while he read the story he knew without a doubt that he never regretted anything that happened between Allie and him. He knew that he never made a mistake in staying with here at the house she was in. Noah figured that Allie meant everything to him and he did not want to leave her. I believe that Allie as well was looking at her life without really knowing that she was. I say this because she is the one who wrote the book for Noah to read to her so that she could remember him for brief moments in time just to stay with him. I think that as she was writing that story she…

    Spirited Away Review

Spirited away is an enchanting, dazzling, and gorgeously drawn fairy tale that will leave the viewers a little more curious and fascinated by the world around them. This Japanese animated fantasy film was directed and written by Hayao Miyazaki, and was released on July 27, 2001. The story was based on Miyazaki’s friend’s ten year old daughter, who visited his house every summer. The movie portrays a sullen ten year old girl, Chihiro Ogino (voice by Daveigh Chase), and her parents who were driving to their new home, when her father takes a wrong turn and ends up at what they think is an abandoned amusement park, but really is an alternate reality inhabited by monsters and spirits. Witch Yubaba turns her parents into pigs, and in order to find a way to free herself and her parents and escape into the human world, Chihiro takes a job working at Yubaba’s bathhouse. This movie can compare to ‘Alice in the Wonderland’ because they both tell the story of a 10-year-old girl who wanders into a world of strange creatures and illogical rules. It was a little hard to interpret the meaning and moral of the movie at first, but it was still a pleasure to watch. The cinematography was well done and the animations were well flowing and seemed to dance off the screen. Director Miyazaki’s drawing style is incredible, and is much different from classical Japanese graphic artists, with its clear lines, rich detail, subtle uses of colors, and the realistic deception of fantastic elements. The music in this film was composed and conducted by Miyazaki's regular collaborator Joe Hisaishi, and performed by the New Japan Philharmonic. The music was beautifully put together, and in the special features of the DVD, Hayao Miyazaki explains how the song in fact inspired him to create Spirited Away. Therefore, I give this film an A-, and Spirited away is a work of pagan imagination that everyone should watch…

It is a glimpse into how differently a father would raise his children if given a chance to do so without interference or boundaries. It reminds us that once parents learn to listen to each other instead of fighting with each other during divorce proceedings they will finally come around to doing what is best for their children. The movie introduces the viewers to the changing dynamic of the American family. Mothers are no longer stay at home moms who simply tend to children and cook meals. These days women like Miranda Hillard (Sally Field) are career driven heads of industries. It is also not uncommon these days to find a stay at home dad like Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams). The problem with this situation is that even though mothers bring home the bacon, they are still expected to come home and perform their wifely and motherly duties. Something that society has not once, throughout the history or marriages expected from the husband and father. Such a situation indeed takes its toll on any marriage and weakens the foundation of the…

The movie evoked an awareness of the grief. An emotion I felt as if I had overcame came rushing back and caused an uncontrollable flow of tears. Those tears informed me, that I was not over the death of my mentor and I need to deal with those emotions. Vivian Bearing had stage four cancer like my mentor and the emotions I felt when she died were the emotions, I experienced while watching the movie. The movie was challenging as a result of what I experienced over a year ago, the movie enabled me to receive another outlook of person who is dying and has made peace with death. While Vivian transitioned alone without family and friends around, my mentor transitioned with family and friends. Perhaps Vivian was so focused on her career she avoided establishing any relationships with people. She might have thought establishing relationships would deter her from achieving her…

Far and Away begins in late 19th century Ireland. A young, ambitious tenant farmer who dreams of owning his own land, Joseph Donnelly, wants to get revenge on his father’s death by killing his landlord, Daniel Christie. His journey to the landlord’s home is unsuccessful, and he is stuck in the leg with a pitchfork by the landlord’s daughter, Shannon. He is locked up in a spare bedroom. It is here that Shannon tells Joseph of land that is being given away in the Oklahoma Territory of America. She too wants to escape Ireland and go to modernized America. During a duel with The Christie’s manager, Stephen, he and Shannon escape and ride off, despite their bickering differences to catch a boat leaving to go to America. When they arrive at Boston Harbor in Massachusetts around 1893, Shannon looses her valuable possessions. In a strange place without any money, he and Shannon go to a local Irish club. In this club, Joseph, as well as the club owner, discovers his talent for boxing and offers them housing and jobs. Shannon and Joseph live in a ratty hotel for a few months, saving the money that he earns boxing and she earns at a chicken factory to eventually move west into the Oklahoma Territory. To protect her he says she is his sister. He is quickly recognized as a brilliant fighter and eligible bachelor making a lot of money, but when he looses one fight, he and Shannon are shunned from the community and striped of their belongings. On the verge of starvation and freezing, the pair is forced to break into a house where Shannon gets shot in the shoulder. He and Shannon are separated when Shannon’s family comes to America to find their daughter after their house had been burned down by revolting tenant farmers.
