The mountainous region shows to be a beautiful and lively place until you get stuck within its grasps. The mountains can be a symbol for some people as a version of prison or a place with no escape. Living in the mountains for a long period of time can put you into a socially placed group for people that have a certain way of talking or way of dressing. A common theme that appears within Ron Rash’s stories is that the unknown and unruly territory of the southern Appalachians can be dangerous and foreign to outsiders.…

Two boys are sent to a mountain at the age of 17 and 18 during the Cultural Revolution in China in the 1970s for re-education. The narrator, a violin player, and his best friend Luo both have parents that are doctors and therefore classed as enemies of the people, which is the worst thing that can happen to an intellectual. The chance of going home from this remote village 500 kilometers away from their hometown, the big city Chengdu, is less than three in a thousand. At the mountain Phoenix of the Sky, which is just a poetic way of suggesting its terrifying altitude, they are put into a house on stilts with a sow underneath in the poorest village perched on a summit. Their re-education consists of working in a coal mine and carrying buckets of excrement up and down a mountain. With them in another village is an old friend called Fore-Eyes, because of his glasses. Soon the two discover his hidden suitcase that contains a large number of Western literature translated into Chinese. And when they meet the Little Seamstress, the beautiful mountain girl in need of culture, they decide to steal the suitcase.…
Today, we often are bombarded with upsetting stories of violence and politics happening throughout the world on the internet, our daily televised news stations, the radio, and in newspapers and articles that we read. In the book Half the Sky, written by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, true stories regarding the horrific reality young girls and women are faced with in underprivileged countries across the world are brought to its reader’s attention. Although these stories are not the easiest to read, emotionally, what is inspiring is the work of organizations dedicated to helping these young girls and women. The book includes a number of organizations focused in aiding females in these parts of the world. There were two specific organizations that stood out to me while reading Half the Sky, as their mission has been successful in providing medical care to girls and women who have endured suffering related to sexual violence and inadequate maternal care. The Edna Adan Maternity Hospital and HEAL Africa charitable organizations have taken great strides in providing the necessary services to help girls and women recover; ultimately saving their life. (Please note: According to Half the Sky, it is the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital, however, according the organizations website, (www.ednahospital.org), the name is Edna Adan University Hospital. For this essay, I will be using the name as referenced in Half the Sky.)…

Children who are neglected tend to use their imaginations as a way of escape. In his story, “The Ascent”, Ron Rash is essentially concerned with illusion, reality and a young boy’s desire for a better life. This is illustrated by the protagonist’s dreams of winning a classmate’s affection, his struggle with his parents and his discovery of a lost plane.…

American Gothic literature of the late nineteenth century can generally be characterized by its interest in Psychology. Rather than incorporate the supernatural or science fiction, which is the foci in other Gothic works at the time, authors such as Edgar Allen Poe and Charlotte Perkins Gilman use this mental condition of their protagonist in order to achieve the expected Gothic reaction. Specifically, in Gilman's "the Yellow Wallpaper", the protagonist, a white, middle class housewife diagnosed with depression, sinks into insanity right before the readers eyes; her psychology unfolds and produces that horrific reaction appropriate for the American Gothic. This, however, in not the only product of Gilman's work. Through literary style, unusual characterization, and a haunting (and knowledgeable) account of madness, Gilman makes her intended statement effectively: nineteenth century women were not only repressed, but practically driven to inhumanity by the men who overprotected and underestimated them. Both traditional Gothic elements and productive special position are laced throughout Gilman's short story.…
