Earnest Hemingway’s Big Two Hearted River, is a simple timeless tale of renewal and continuance. It is a rebirth of light from the dark depths of abaddonian nothingness of the fire-ravaged earth, of the town of Seney. Hemingway creates, using picturesque imagery similar to an Americana painting of a camping trip ala the boy scouts, an almost pristine environment where nature strives and a man called “Nick” treads anew. Hemingway’s use of imagery and meticulous attention to detail, are the sole factors in the evolution of the story Big Two Hearted River. Unlike other stories read this semester, there is seemingly little to no external conflict in which to dissect or allow for substantial character development. My only question on Earnest Hemingway’s Big Two Hearted River, is the title. How does the title tie into the story, and is tit supposed to? Through narration, Hemingway introduces us to the sole and uncomplicated character of Big Two Hearted River, a wayfarer with a nack for fishing simply called Nick. Nick gives some hint that he is familiar with the town of Seney by internally commenting on its appearance, “The country was burned over and changed, but it didn’t matter.”(817) As the story unfolds Nick makes his way from the symbolic destruction of by fire of Seney, to the waters of life filled with trout where he chooses a site and plans to rebuild. Earnest Hemingway’s Big Two Hearted River, is to put it succinctly, a story of a man along with his memories consulting nature through fishing. Big Two Hearted River is a very easy read that leaves little to question. The topic of how and way Seney burned is unimportant because other than a few sentences in the opening, not much more is mentioned. The state of Seney being burnt is almost a trivial fact that is accepted as common information.
