Robert Harris, a renowned writer and experienced professor, published “On the Purpose of a Liberal Art Education” in 1991. He was astounded by how many students he heard mumbling about a generalized education plan; therefore, he felt the compulsive need to explain why a general education not only gives a first-year student a foundation for later learning, but also improves a student’s life. Before Harris could write his paper, he had to investigate the claim; thus, Newman’s The Idea of University shaped Harris's opinion on a liberal education. Newman and Harris both agree that a generalized education helps train the mind to see culture in every situation. Moreover, this article states that a liberal arts education will teach a student how to think, how to learn, how to see the world as a whole, how to become a good teacher, and how to be happier.…

The movement to cut art from many schools has been growing in recent years. Education cuts are becoming more prevalent as schools face tough decisions on budgets. Unfortunately, art classes are usually some of the first victims of these cuts. Recent protests in California reflect the growing concern about budget cuts. Schools have already made cuts of $18 billion in California and more cuts totaling $4.1 billion may be necessary (Kirkland 1). California is not the only state facing this situation. Lower tax revenues, increasing prices and the slow economic recovery have created problems across the United States. The event of recent cuts in the art programs is a serious issue, and when I become an art teacher I want to take a stand…

In Derek Bok’s “Preparing for a Career”, the author argues that balance is obligatory when it comes to vocational and liberal art schools in order for students to prosper in college. With the change in time, the college graduate expectancy rate has augmented. At the same time, the requirement and educational level has also gotten more difficult. Bok writes this essay from a professor’s perspective. It is noted in his autobiography that he was a student at Stanford University and George Washington University (Bok 36).He was also a former dean of the law school at Harvard University. His experience by itself gives him credibility to what he is writing. He has experienced different top universities and working at one has given him the insight…

Murray argues that a four year college degree is not as beneficial and productive as loomed, while Ungar contends that obtaining liberal art education is the current need indeed. Both the author, Ungar and Murray believe that a student should get knowledge in basic subjects like art, history, music, and literature, as it is important for critical thinking and effective communication. Ungar, who is also the president of college of Liberal Art Education, emphasizes the need of liberal art degree by showing percentage of employer’s opinion in 2009 survey for Association of American College and Universities: “An astounding 89 percent said they were looking for…

An associate degree is basically the next step or level of education after your high school diploma. Anybody can receive their associate’s degree either at the Early College High School or college. Also if you attend an Early College High School and didn’t get your associates by the 12th grade year, at least you can try again at college. Hopefully your credits will transfer to the college of your choice and you can resume from there. In addition to receiving your associate’s degree, time management is another thing in order to be successful in both educational…

    Honors College Benefits

I have become fond of the liberal arts education The College of Charleston offers, which emphasizes exploration into all areas of academia. An example of this would be the honors history courses that interest me, as I enjoy learning beyond my focus of science, and into other areas that create an appreciation for society’s diversity. One of the many aspects of the Honors College I find engaging are the academic opportunities unique to the Honors College that allow students to develop in their major interests, but also diversify their knowledge in all areas, as the academic requirements extend from calculus to western civilization. The opportunities the Honors College extends to its students are what make it appealing to me, and my experience so far in college has led me to believe that I am the right fit for the Honors College, as it would help me develop as a person, and help me achieve my…

Arts programs throughout the country have had to be cut or reduced due to lack of funding from the government. Richard Colwell, author of "Whither Programs and Arts Policy?" states that, though the outcomes of an arts education are unique and beneficial to the student, under the NCLB act, they (fine arts programs) are ignored (22). He goes on to state that students will never be able to "compete in a globalized world" if the NCLB act continues the way it has been (25). Colwell advises fine arts teachers to "ignore the present trends in teacher education and develop their own programs" in order to avoid being crushed by the NCLB (25). Colwell suggests that these problems could be avoided if only the government would "step up" their funding of the programs and the…
