Deckard, a so called ‘Blade Runner’, of a violent group of artificial human beings called replicants. As Deckard hunts them down, one by one, and attempts to eliminate them (which is now dubbed as putting into retirement), the replicants themselves conduct their own quest to find and confront their creator before Deckard destroys them. As the replicants themselves appear more human as the film goes on, Deckard himself is challenged by the thought that he might be a replicant himself.

Deckard seems to be prominent and distinguished figure in his area of expertise as revealed through the dialogue between him and Bryant, however, Deckard seems resolute and unwavering in not continuing work as a blade runner, stating: “I was quit when I come in here, Bryant, I'm twice as quit now”. Bryant remains firm in his attempts to convince Deckard to rejoin the company, “I need ya, Deck. This is a bad one, the worst yet. I need the old blade runner, I need your magic”. This gives the audience the impression that Deckard has almost reached legendary status in the blade runner realm due to his skillful nature at “retiring” replicants. Since it is revealed that the central occupation of the society at the time was being a cop, this establishes Deckard as having a very significant and admirable status in society.

The replicants have been declared illegal on Earth. At the beginning of the film, a group of replicants hijack a shuttle to Earth, intending to infiltrate their place of manufacture and extend their four-year lifespan. Deckard, formerly the best blade runner, is called out of retirement to hunt them down. He is reluctant to resume work, but is told he has no choice and must use some of "the old blade runner magic" to succeed.
