    Finding Fish

The book, finding fish, is a poignant autobiography of the life of Antwone Quenton Fisher, an African American boy who suffered a tumultuous childhood in a foster care setting. He was born on 8-3-1959 in a Cleveland prison to Eva Mae Fisher. She was incarcerated for the shooting death of his father, her boyfriend at the time, Eddie Elkins. Initially, he spent his first few weeks of his life in a Cleveland orphanage. Then he was fostered by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Nellie Strange. She lovingly cared for him for two years. One 10-11-1961 he was placed in the foster home of the Reverend and Mrs. Pickett, an African American couple who came from southern black heritage. Mr. Pickett was a kind man with a doctorate in medicine and his wife, the abuser, was the matriarch of the family. For the next eighteen years of Antwone’s life, he would suffer terrible physical, verbal and emotional abuse in this home, even though he would have a total of thirteen social workers “monitoring” his case. In the Pickett’s home, Antwone had three foster siblings; Flo, Dwight and Keith. Antwone suffers so much chronic abuse that he never feels confident enough to tell any of his social workers about his abuse. He is even sexually abused by Willenda, a babysitter who cares for the children at times. Antwone is finally kicked out of the home around his sixteenth birthday and he finds himself at George Junior Republic, a reform school for boys. Even though he isn’t a trouble maker, he loves being there because he finds teachers who really mentor him. While he lives there, he is able to take tests and graduate early from high school. Unfortunately now he has “graduated’ from the foster care system since he is eighteen and he is forced to become homeless and sell drugs for money. The best thing that ever happens to him is when he enrolls in the United States Navy. While serving an eleven year term, he develops…

Thousands of texts were unearthed, translated and analyzed starting in the eighteenth century. Assyriologist Freidrich Delitzsch claimed that the Bible was plagiarized from Mesopotamian literature. This was an important statement as it would indicate that the Old Testament was not divine and that Christianity was rooted in mythology.…

This book looks at the ever present controversial topic of women in ministry. Since the 1990’s and what has been called the “third wave of feminism,”1 men and women have been advocating gender equality in society.2 The theological implications of this have resulted with the question of whether or not limits should be placed on the leadership roles of women in the church. There are two primary views concerning this topic. First, there is the complementarian or traditionalist view which limits the role of women in leadership positions in the church. Second, there is the egalitarian view, characterized by a belief in the equality of all people, which believes that no limits should be placed on the role of women in leadership in the church. The title of this book is a misnomer; the main issue is not women in ministry, but women in leadership positions in the church hierarchy. There does not appear to be a middle ground in this on-going controversial subject, as shown by the four essays and the critical responses to them in this book.…

While many will agree that Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is critically acclaimed to be one of the most entertaining and well-liked pieces that he has written, there tends to be a discrepancy over how the characters in the play are portrayed when it comes to the importance of gender roles. After reading James C Bulman’s article over the Globe’s more recent performance of Twelfth Night and Shakespeare’s original written version, I realized that there are many ways that this famous piece has been portrayed and each has its own pros and cons.…

First off, Mortimer Adler in “How to mark a book” states that by writing between lines of a book, preferably books that contain ideas, one is most likely to practice the art of effective reading. Marking a book is an act of love and shows, what Mortimer likes to call, “full ownership” of the book. Purchasing a book with money is only a prelude to book ownership. That person only owns pulp wood and ink if he does not read them, according to Mortimer but where one is able to absorb and understand the book content, fully owns that book. Mortimer Adler has categorized book ownership into three. Two cases which have been talked about above. The cases where one owns books but does not read them and the other where one exhausts the book content into his brain by marking the book. The other case is where one may have many books but has read few and most of them in are good condition. This person probably wants to make full use of the book but is said to have false respect for the book. Marking a book brings about thoughtful reading and probably leads to disfiguring and loosening of the books due to continual usage. Some argue to say that some books are just meant to be taken care of as they are of soul value to the reader. Mortimer states that in some cases it may be true but still tries to enlighten us that a book is not like a statue which has certain values that necessitate people to keep it in good condition. Marking a book is an act of love and not of mutilation. Among other things, marking a book involves underlining sentences, drawing vertical lines on the underlined sentences to emphasize importance of the statement, writing numbers on the margin to show sequence of the points. The numbers can also be used to indicate pages where points relevant to the marked point are. Other marking methods are circling, writing in the margin which includes things like answers to questions raised in the passage, questions raised in your mind from the passage.…

A book is a literary composition that is published or intended for publication containing a set of printed, illustrated or blank sheets made of ink, paper parchment or other materials, fastened together to hinge at one side. (Oxford English Dictionary 12th Edition) Although thousands of books are published even today, the digital world is slowly taking over these editions with their digital forms i.e online or E-books. The term E-book is a contraction of ‘Electronic Book’; it refers to a book length publication is digital form that is usually made available through the internet but is also accessible on CD-ROMS. Due to the high advancement and rapid growth in technology, very few people prefer referring to the actual textbooks anymore and instead prefer a version of the same text in a format that can be easily accessible through our usual appliances i.e. our laptops and smart phones.…
