College Students and Obesity Essay Example
Have you ever heard of “freshman ten?” How about the “freshman thirty?” These are some deadly terms students should try to avoid. They refer to the amount of weight gained during a student’s first year at a college. During college years, students are still developing the physical and social changes of their life (French). During these years, they demand for more energy and nutrition. The problem is that they are not eating healthy enough. College students must learn how to make the right decisions to prevent obesity from taking over. Decisions such as avoiding fast food, watching the amount of alcohol intake, and sleeping and exercising regularly. However, it is very difficult to make such decisions because we do not have that much time in our busy lives. Take Kevin Tran, a student at the University of Arkansas- Fort Smith (UAFS), for example--he complains, “Man, I don’t have the time to make myself a meal, so I just go through the drive-thru at El Super Taco.” Unhealthy decisions like these are made every day by students. Imagine if the majority of the population at UAFS are like him. Then we are all doomed. “Colleges should implement programs to increase student awareness of healthy weight management methods and the importance of physical activity combined with a healthy diet” (Lowry). A healthy diet is very important in one’s life. Of course we hear this all the time, but can you really maintain a healthy diet with the time we have in our busy lives? The life of typical college students consist of school, work, homework, studying, parties, more homework and more parties. While juggling all these activities, we sometimes forget to eat so to satisfy our ever-growing hunger, we turn to fast food, “foods that are high in fat and are low intake in foods with fiber, fruits, and vegetables” (French). Why do we do it? Because it is cheap, delicious, and of course fast. McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Taco bell are just a few fast food restaurants that roam the

Targeting college students will provide an opportunity for reaching large numbers of young adults through education and prevention programs that promote healthy behaviors (Lowry, Galuska, Fulton, Wechsler, Kann, Collins, 2000). “In the United States, more than 12 million students, the majority (57%) of whom are between 18 and 24 years of age, are enrolled in 3,600 colleges and universities” (Racette, Deusinger, Strube, Highstein, Deusinger, 2005, p. 250, para. 3). Moreover, the educational setting can also offer unique chances to positively impact eating habits, physical activity, and other behaviors of large numbers of students (Lowry, Galuska, Fulton, Wechsler, Kann, Collins, 2000). Research suggested that the most reachable population in whom assessment and intervention are effective may be college students (Racette, Deusinger, Strube, Highstein, Deusinger, 2005). In addition, adopting a healthy lifestyle may help college students to deal more successfully with daily academic stress and reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases (ferrera,…

A journal article I found through the Florida Atlantic University Library website displays information on an observation of college freshman willingness to learn nutritional information. John Todorovich and his colleagues created a nutrition course module program for incoming college students with poor eating habits. Following the nutrition course, five major themes emerged showing how useful the course was after all. The first theme Todorovich noted was the acquisition of knowledge on topics like portion sizes, different food groups, how to choose healthier snack items, and how to prepare small yet healthy meals for oneself. The study indicated that mostly all students involved learned a significant amount of nutrition information. The second theme of the study was the behavior change of the students involved. Most students vowed to change their poor eating habits, except for a handful of stubborn male students who stated they would be reluctant to change their eating habits unless is was absolutely necessary. On the brighter side, the vast majority of students agreed to start preparing more healthy meals for themselves as opposed to fast food, and to eliminate soft drinks like soda from their diet. In the third theme of the study, it was found that the informal and wittiness of the college graduate nutrition students added to the effectiveness of the…

For instance, low-income families are likely to face more challenges and become obese due to not being able to eat healthy.
