Mt Pinatubo volcano in the Philippines erupted in June 1991. [First volcano] Its eruption consisted of many pyroclastic flows and the large high ash clouds, and had severely negative impacts on the population, and their livelihoods, of the nearby towns including Angeles City. A large% of the town was covered with ash deposits and many people were made homeless there and from smaller settlements closer to the crater.
The short term response to this eruption was the actions of the Philipino Army, police and with the support of the US airforce personel and equipment to evacuate thousands of people from these settlements, taking them away from danger. Around 200,000 lowland people evacuated either before or during the eruption phase from the 12th June. The government also provided gas masks and clean water for the 100,000 people forced into the evacuation centres such as the Government DSWD run camp and resettlement sites for lowlanders or Aytas people. As businesses + homes had been destroyed, the Government provided a disaster fund for people affected by the eruption, the lowland farming communities received over 1.8billion Pesos The authorities also upgraded the status of the volcano, as it had previously been classified as not a threat. Another long term response by the government was the provision of funds for agriculture and other primary industries to allow them to re establish with some quick income generating opportunities including 615Million Pesos for an Agriculture Development Program.
