Critical Essay Example on "Just Lather Thats All"
(Critical Essay On “Just Lather, That’s All” By Hernando Tellez) By Benaiah Trudell Just Dilemmas, That’s All AP English 10 “Just Lather, That’s All” proves that decisions people make and the dilemmas they end up in reflect largely on their personalities. Decisions show everyone what kind of person you are (enthusiastic, depressed, anger-deprived, intelligent, careful, judgmental, etc.) This short story is about a war between the governments’ military forces and the protestors (‘The Rebels”). During this war, there was a local barber in the town. The captain (of the troops against the protestors) came into the barber’s shop for a haircut himself. The barber was facing his worst enemy and has huge decisions to make during this ‘oblivious’ visit. “When I recognized him, I started to tremble. But he didn’t notice.” Terrified, yet half-determined, will the author’s decision be worth the consequences? The author uses a lot of foreshadowing throughout the story. First, it’s unnoticeable. Then it becomes more and more obvious as you go on. The barber was sharpening the blades on the strop when the captain entered. He creates a mental picture of the enemy’s neck, throat, veins... “An enemy under ones roof,” “taking pains to see that no single pore emitted a drop of blood,” “Bit by bit, the skin emerged.” The author is making his lust for the open skin on the captain’s neck, showing his strength towards himself to not make it bleed. This foreshadowing is telling you that the barber himself is possibly going to harm the captain. Self-conflict is shown a lot in the story as well. The barber is fighting against himself, within himself, whether or not to slit the captain’s throat. “And how easy it would be to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he? No! What the Devil! No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a

The definition of a coward is one to show fear, the barber shows he is a coward by being afraid, seconding guessing himself, and showing weakness. When the captain walks into the barber shop he begins to quiver on the spot, therefore showing how fearful his is of the captain. For example “When I recognized him I started to tremble.” The barber without a doubt is showing terror. When you’re brave and courageous you never doubt yourself and stick to your guns, however the barber does not. In other words, when you plan on doing something you should never back down. On the other hand the barber does back down. For instance, “But what would I do with the body? Where would I hide it? I would have to flee…” Here he begins to think about what would happen if he did kill the captain and therefore leading him to not kill. In addition, the barber says “No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer.” In other words he is trying to say he doesn’t deserve to be the one to kill him and be called a murderer. Finally, the barber gives off vulnerability by thinking of reducing the amount of pain and suffering to the captain. For example, the barber thinks to himself “I'm sure that one solid stroke, one deep incision, would prevent any pain. He wouldn't suffer.” Caring for the enemy and trying to minimize the amount of pain they will have is true acts of a coward. In conclusion being fearful, doubting oneself, and giving off weakness is a sure fire sign of a coward.…

Secondly, the barber would have been a coward because he would have to flee leaving all he had behind. He was well aware that he would have to run and thus he made a statement, “I would have to flee, leaving all I had behind, and take a refuge far away” (51). He would have to run, saving himself from Torres’ people. As he would have killed the captain cowardly, he had to hide his face from the society. He would have to find places to hide himself from Torres’ people. He might also have to lose his job. Furthermore, the barber would have been a coward because, he was vulnerable. He was weak and afraid of killing captain Torres, especially with his eyes open. Thus, when the captains’ eyes were closed, he whispered, “I could cut his throat just so – Zip, Zip! I would not give him time to resist and since his eyes were closed he would not see the glistening blade and my glistening eyes” (50). The barber would have thought that as the captains’ eyes were closed he might not come to know about his thoughts. The barber would even not give him the chance to perform any such actions which would create problems for him. Thus all such thoughts of the barber, about killing the…

In “Just Lather, That’s All” by Hernado Tellez, the barber, the protagonist of the story, is faced with a dilemma when he must determine whether it is right or wrong to commit murder. With his “destiny depend[ing] on the edge of [his] blade,” Tellez suppresses the barber’s final decision from the reader until the end of the story, in order hold their attention. Additionally, the indeterminate ending prevents the plot’s intrigue from dissolving by leaving much to the reader’s interpretation. There is no closure to the situation; because of the barber’s final decision, the captain’s exit from the barbershop arouses as many questions for the reader as does his arrival at the beginning of the story. This generates additional fear for the barber…

The barber had him right in his hands, but he didn't take the chance of killing him knowing that there would be an end of his killing and his terror. I walked in hung my cartridge studded belt with a pistol holster suspended from it on a hook in the wardrobe and hung my hat above it. I turned around toward the barber, loosened my tie and said “It’s hot as the devil, I want a shave” with that I sat down and waited for him. It has been four days since my last shave; I have been out on the foray looking for rebels. He started to apply the shaving soap, he scraped a bit of the soap and applied some warm water and the lather began to rise. “We caught the leaders. Some of the brought back dead and some alive.” With a troubled tone he asked “How many did you take” I replied fourteen and with that he put the sheet on me and began to work. He started carefully; he slowly removed my beard I could feel his hand trembling. He knew who I was, Captain Torres the leader of the regime fighting the rebels like himself I was told if I come in or a shave he would kill me. I just had to find out if he would, I leaned back exposing my neck and closed my eyes and waited for him to finish. Once he finished I got said thanked him adjusted my buckle straightened my gun, put my hat on and pulled some coins out of my pocket as payment and headed towards the door. I stopped at the threshold and told the barber that “They said you would kill me. I came to find out if it was…

At multiple points in life, people are faced with judgments ranging in difficulty and significance. And every decision could be affected by outside influences which could persuade people to make a choice. Sometimes, one is faced with the choice of which juice to drink in the morning, a very minute decision to make. There are other, more substantial decisions like choosing which college to attend or whether or not it is the right time to buy a home. Depending on the size of the decision and influence, everything that happens in one’s life could be crucial moments that determine the final outcome of one’s life. This was seen in Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima and Bernard Malamud’s The Natural. Both author’s used the main characters to show that one’s future is determined by the choices made throughout life, and the outside influences that guide the choices. Anaya and Malamud use other’s expectations, other’s guidance, and decisions made as significant points that help determine the outcome of the main character’s future.…

In the book, being a barber is the protagonist’s profession and desire. I can connect this to myself because I have a strong desire to play the piano 6 years ago, and I continue to do it today. This shows the similarities between the story and the experience in myself, by showing the type of passion that you are interested in and doing an activity that you are proficient in. In the quote, “I was also a conscientious barber, and proud of the preciseness of my profession, and this four days growth of beard was a fitting challenge,” this shows how the protagonist (the barber) expressed his enjoyment in shaving people and being a barber by using the words “proud”. Also, he expresses how he is dedicated into correctly shaving people, as well not showing any complaints of any challenges that he faces, which proves that it is his profession that he enjoys by not backing out in any circumstances. This also shows that he had no intention of killing Torres, even if he was faced with a decision in the future since shaving people is much more important in his life. In my experience with the piano, this shows that it is unlikely that I would play another instrument instead of the one that I had played for several years if given the decision to, which shows the amount of desire when playing the…

Captain Torres and The Barber both vaule their jobs, in one way Captain Torres values his job by killing people without a second thought because it is his job. "But we did all right, you know. We got the main ones. We brought back some dead, we've got some others still alive. But pretty soon they'll all be dead". This is showing that Captain Torres values his job in every way and do whatever it takes to keep his job his. “Just lather that's all” has strong ties towards the world past and current. My topic for critical connections assignment is “Are morals more important than what is best?”. This theme in just lather that's all can be seen in WWII when American and British armies would choose whether they would bomb German concentration camps and the trains leading to them. As this would stop Germans from killing them by concentration camps and give a chance for prisoners to escape and stop delivery of prisoners to the camp but killing countless victims in the process in the camp or on the tracks. It ties with Just Lather, That's All if the barber killed the officer there would be fewer executions and fewer deaths of prisoners but he decides not to because it is a sin in his religion.…
