According to Ernest Hemingway, “...all things truly wicked start from innocence.” This quotation means that everything that is evil was once pure. I agree with the quotation because when your are pure of anything contaminated, the environment can create evilness in a person. Through the use of symbolism in Lord of the Flies, and irony in Oedipus the King, William Golding and Sophocles shows the readers that corruption stems from innocence.
William Golding uses symbolism in Lord of the Flies to prove that everything bad began with goodness. Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys from England who are stranded on an island with no adults. For example, the boys were having a feast sharing and getting along. The narrator states, “The boys with the spit gave Ralph and Piggy each succulent chunk. They took the gift, dribbling. So they stood and ate beneath a sky of thunderous brass that rang with the storm coming(149).” The boys then killed simon, mistaking him for the beast. The boys chant, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!(152)” This example shows that the boys go from innocent boys to savages animals, who kill without remorse. When Piggy goes to Castle Rock to get his glasses back from Jack’s tribe he gets killed and the conch gets smashed by a boulder rock. The narrator states, “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exit(181).” This example proves that the symbolism of the conch’s meaning has vanished. It meant togetherness, power and leadership, but when the conch breaks the meaning of the conch is gone. The boys act like animals and forget the true meaning of the conch, and they begin acting like animals. The environment is influencing the once innocent boys to act in an immoral way. William Golding is not the only author that proves that everything evil started form virtuousness.

n the Lord of The Flies, William Golding represents the characters' descent from civilization to savagery through symbolism. One of the ways it is represented is fear, and its evolution as its source ceases to be external factors such as nature and becomes people, suggesting all the boys have a potential for evil within them. Becoming more savage and letting go of their civilized morals, the boys oppress one another, resulting in many of them becoming submissive and scared.…

Throughout literature, certain things are considered to mean something beyond themselves; these symbols make themselves ever present in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. While some symbols appear in an obvious fashion (the glasses, the pig’s head) others like to hide from the reader (the fire, the conch shell). From Piggy’s introduction into the novel, they symbolize of his glasses seemed apparent. The glasses symbolize a voice of reason and logic within the boys, and once Jack took Piggy’s glasses from him and started the fire all the logic dissipated. The shell symbolizes an organized civilization within the boys. As they search for someone a leader, they notice Ralph – one of the oldest in the bunch – holding the conch shell. Since they dubbed Ralph leader “They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority” (Golding 50). The fire symbolizes both the hope of rescue and an innate destructive change and reentrance into a primitive state within the human mind. The pig’s head symbolizes the aggression which Jack harbors toward everything as it becomes more and more dominant throughout the novel, but the pig’s head also becomes a symbol of the savagery and bloodlust of the boys near the end of the novel.…

A well-known American author, Mark Twain, once said; “Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody.” This proves that one’s human nature has a seed, growing inside, consisting of both good and evil. In the novel Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, as the novel progresses, the nature of hunting changes. This persuades the boys to abandon the values of civilization, leading them to self-indulge themselves with savagery. At first, the main purpose of hunting is for meat. It is evident that the innocence within Jack and the hunters is present when they have a hard time adjusting to their new lifestyle. This can be seen when they fail to follow through with the killing of the piglet. As the novel advances, innocence begins to fade and savagery comes to light. Now that hunting is no longer being utilized for survival, Jack and the hunters exhilaration and enjoyment to kill shows when they murder the sow. The hunters excitement explains how…

The animalistic, selfish and inherently evil nature of human beings is illustrated and referenced through allegory, an act of interpretation to further demonstrate concepts of the human condition. In William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies, the characters and setting are read as an allegory linking directly to religious figures and biblical stories, including those of Cain and Abel, Adam and Eve and of Jesus Christ, to unveil the harsh truths about the boys’ inherent savagery and the inevitable deterioration of order and civilisation it ensues.…

In Lord of the Flies, several symbols are used to illustrate important ideas that are crucial to the plot and meaning of the book. One of these symbols is the conch: this rare shell is not only a precious and expensive in the world of merchandise; it also holds a dark and mysterious power over a group of English boys, lost on an island with no adults, clues, or means of escape. The boys set up a civilization and try to live in the society they have set up. This system works for a while, aided by the power of the conch. However, as the story advances, the civilized way of life that the boys have set up starts falling apart, and savagery starts luring certain boys outside of the safe and rational walls of civilization. William Golding intertwines the fast-paced, enticing story of the boys’ plight on the island and the descent into savagery with the powerful and deeply meaningful symbolism of the conch.…

In the novel written by William Golding, The lord of the flies, the possible story of many young boys being alone on an island with no adult guidance is explained. “The only worthwhile literature is that which makes you think about you own life.” This statement is valid for many reasons like, sometimes you can compare the story to your own life, it makes you think about what you said and done to other people, and the story can be a real eye opener and could possibly help you get your life back on track to the road of success. Two works of literature that support this quote are A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Spark and To Save a life by Jim and Rachel Britts.…

Over the course of youth’s childhood, they will eventually make a remarkable change from an adolescent into an adult, resembling a caterpillar undergoing metamorphosis and emerging into a beautiful butterfly. For years there has been a debate between teenagers and adults dealing with the topic of when teens rightfully become mature and grown up. Henry G. Felsen addresses this subject through telling his own sixteen year old son his opinions and thoughts on this debate in ‘When Does a Boy Become a Man?’. The difference between a boy and a man is not in which one looks like, it is the actions and choices that a man makes which differentiates him from the boy he once was. Henry Felsen has done a commendable job in supporting this theory. He explains what the future holds for these teens that rush into adulthood with the wrong idea of what it is all about.…

Success is to achieve something that we truly long for. “Sometimes failure is more beneficial than success.” Written by Darren Roberts. This is a very inspiring quote for all species of mankind. I agree rightfully with this quote as it states that even sometimes there are ups and downs, falls and disruptions in life, but those problems make us even stronger and prevent us from making the same mistake and make us more successful in life. Although, if losing things sometimes make us closer to something we want, we must make a go for it. As In Homers’, The Odyssey, and Nancy’s’, The House of The Scorpion, the main characters deal with personal loss and face many hardships, but finally reach to their own respected homes and families, safe and soundly.…
