Dante's Inferno Summary
Canto I
-The Dark Wood-Dantes meets the Lion, Wolf, and leopard that blocks his path to leave. Meets Virgil

Canto II
-Ante-Inferno-those who live without disgrace or praise (stuck constantly chasing after a banner (goal) for they never had a goal when they were alive. Passes Acheron, guarded by Limbo to enter Limbo. Ghosts do not feel compassion for those in other levels of hell except for their own.

Canto III and IV
-First circle of hell-limbo-virtuous but un baptized -punishment=no hope and ever longing for god -poets/philosophers/etc -Homer, Socrates, (live in a castle that has light because Dante put poets in high regard)

Canto V
-Minos is a monster that judges which level of hell a sinner goes. Coils his tail as many times as the level of hell that he want the sinner to go to.
-Second level of hell: Lustful/Carnal sinners: blown around by a violent, never ending storm. -includes those whole killed themselves for love -cleopatra, Paris, Achilles, Helen, Francesca de Polanto- slept with brother in law and later killed by husband.

Canto VI
-Gluttonous are punished-when they are alive the do nothing but indulge in food and drinks and produces nothing but wastes so they are punished to be in filth for eternity. (rained on, stand in worms and garbage, barked at by Cereberus. -Ciacco-first prophecy given to Dante
-Before entering into 4th circle of hell Dante and Virgil meets Plutus- “pape satan, pape satan, aleppe” (classical god of wealth) a mythological creature who oversees the punishments of the 4th level of hell

Canto VII
-4th circle of hell-punishes the avarice (miserliness) and prodigiality (wastefulness)-encumbered by dead weights and forced to participate in a parody of an earthy dance.
-forced to push stones against one another, each saying that the other is wrong in the way they manage money. Fitting for their crime because they are both bad but on opposite ends of the spectrum. For their imbalance they must forever work against each other to even each other out -popes and cardinals-avarice in excess- since they did nothing in their lives but cared about money they are considered anonymous (reason why Dante couldn’t recognize any of them.) -Last judgement -prodigal=heads shaved bald -avaricious=outstretched hands closed forever
-Styx- appears to be a boiling spring but is a filthy marsh (before-sins of the she-wolf/incontinence are punished, after sytx= sins of lion and leopard, violence/fraud are punished)
-5th circle of hell- sin of wrathful and sullen-bank of the river styx and constantly fighting the mud. Fitting because they could not manage their anger in life. Sullen are submerged in black tar river, forever choking. Fitting because they never enjoyed their freedoms so now they are forever stuck in the river

Canto VIII
-reaches the foot of the tower of the city of Dis
-Phlegyas: guardian of the wrathful
-Phillipo Argenti- torn to pieces when reached for boat
-rebel angels- guards at the gates of the City of Dis and closed the gates to Virgil and Dante who both expressed wrath in this part of hell. Divine messenger sent by god will open the gates to the City of Dis for Virgil and Dante

Canto IX
-meets the furies and medusa (turns men to stone)
-Finally enters the city of Dis-punishment of the Heretics=locked in burning tombs. Fitting because fire (symbol of god’s love consumes them in torture for in life they went against god, so now they cannot escape his love. There also can only see distant events, not the present)

Dante and Virgil are outside the eighth Circle of Hell, known as Malebolge. The circle has a wall along the outside, and has a circular pit in the center. The ridges create ten separate pits. This is where the people receive their punishment for fraud. This is where Virgil and Dante see souls from one side to another. The demons with great whips cause pain to the souls when they come to the demon’s reach, which then force the souls to the other ridge. There is an Italian that Dante recognize and he speaks to him. The Italian tells Dante that he lived in Bologna, and now is there to sell his sister. The pit is for the Seducers and the Panders, and then Dante saw the Jason of mythology who abandoned Medea. The thirteenth canto of Dante’s The Inferno clearly depicts several of the different themes that can be seen throughout the poem. Some of these themes are the idea of contrapasso, or the notion that the punishment dealt fits the crime committed, the portrayal of Hell as being devoid of hope, and the importance of fame. The images and language Dante uses to describe his experiences in the middle ring of the seventh circle of Hell, which houses the suicides, provide the reader with the feeling of despair and hopelessness present throughout the text, while also serving to show the idea of contrapasso and the underlying importance of fame.…

The book starts out with Dante wandering through the woods but has strayed off “the right path.” He runs into three creatures that block his path and turns around. Dante flees and runs into Virgil, the great roman poet. Dante tells Virgil of the beasts that stand in his way by saying, “Behold the beast, for which I have turned back.” Virgil then tells Dante that one of the beasts, the she-wolf, will one day be driven back down hell where it originated. Virgil then tells him about the path that will ascend them up the hill into heaven, but warns him that they will have to make it through hell before they can even get to heaven. Dante can only remember two men who made it through hell and came back which gets him a little worried about his adventure he is about to embark on.…

Dante the Pilgrim visits many different people while on his journey through Hell in Dante’s Inferno. Each one of these tormented souls are punished for their crimes against themselves, society, and God. Most of these personalities bring no surprise as they are robbers, murderers, and blasphemers. However, the amount of Church authority figures in Hell is staggeringly high. The ironic revelation is never fully dissected by Dante but the implications of this writing may cause the public to turn a leery eye towards the Church. Throughout Dante’s Inferno, the sights of “Holy” men rotting in Hell create a rift between the teachings of the church and the common citizens.…

Throughout the fast-paced lives of people, we are constantly making choices that shape who we are, as well as the world around us; however, one often debates the manner in which one should come to correct moral decisions, and achieve a virtuous existence. Dante has an uncanny ability to represent with such precision, the trials of the everyman's soul to achieve morality and find unity with God, while setting forth the beauty, humor, and horror of human life. Dante immediately links his own personal experience to that of all of humanity, as he proclaims, "Midway along the journey of our life / I woke to find myself in a dark wood, / for I had wandered off from the straight path" (I.1-3). The dark wood is the sinful life on earth, and the straight path is that of the virtuous life that leads to God. Dante's everyman, pilgrim…

Inferno talks about people and how they chose their fate. The story is about Dante's view of hell. Dante believed hell had 9 layers. Each canto tells of the 9 layers and where a person of sin will dwell due to the choices they made in life. For example, in Canto XXXIV (9), it tells of Satan's fate. “And there before them, in an infernal parody of Godhead, they see Satan in the distance, his great wings beating like a windmill.”It also reads, “He is fixed into the ice at the center to which flow all the rivers of guilt; and as he beats his great wings as if to escape, their icy wind only freezes him more surely into the polluted ice.” The more he flaps his wings to try and escape, the more it forces him to be stuck where he is. His destiny is to to be stuck experiencing all of the guilt in the world due to his own actions.…
