ENG 100-
Dick Gregory Gregory grew up in St. Louis Missouri with a poor family background and without a father figure to support him and his family. He was a young child when he fell in love with a beautiful girl named Helene Tucker. Gregory was ashamed of himself after everyone found out about the issue he had with his teacher about the money for the relief people and about Gregory not having a father.
What Gregory means about “I was pregnant with property” was that all the things he went through like hunger, poverty, dirt and smelling bad that nobody wanted to get near him as well as having to sleep with 5 people in the same bed were as strange as pregnant people’s cravings. Gregory felt bad of himself around the community. Sometimes Gregory even took the longest way home so none of the white, rich people could see him.
“I never learn hate at home or shame. I had to go to school for that.” Gregory once says. He felt hate coming from his teacher and shame from others around him. I felt bad for Gregory when he talks about Helene looking straight at him and crying because of the fact that he was making up a father so he would not be left out from the rest of the classmates. Gregory felt hate from people that hated black people. Gregory also felt shame from all the ones that knew what has happened at School with his teacher. I can relate to Gregory in some parts. When I was 13 years old I was living in Denver Colorado in 2003. The school I use to go was full of black people and some white people. Black people where discriminating on the Latino community. I felt really bad and I did not felt comfortable anymore at that school.
Gregory tried to add more money than what he had so other classmates especially Helene would not think that he was poor. It was just an impulse to look better around others. Gregory tried to show off what he did not have. From my point of view showing off does not ever work. I think Gregory should leave things how

A1. Total revenue (TR) to total cost (TC) is cost, which is calculated using total revenue minus the total cost, (TR-TC). As each unit is produced, the total cost increases in addition to the total revenue. Yet, at some point in the production of the additional units, the total revenue will exceed the total cost. While reading the book about Henrietta Lacks and her famous HeLa cells, a few issues came to mind. The first is definitely informed consent and the issues surrounding the medical work with the cells. The second issue that I thought about was Henrietta’s struggle as well as her family’s continuing struggle while she was ill and for years after her death. I am also intrigued about the story behind a white woman making the information about HeLa so well known and how recognition of the cells and their importance is conveyed.…

Ulysses Simpson Grant, (1822-1885), American general and 18th President of the United States. Grant, the most capable of the Union generals during the Civil War, was a master strategist. He won the first major Union victories. President Abraham Lincoln staunchly defended him against critics and promoted him to command all Union forces. Grant accepted Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. However, Grant had no disposition for political leadership, and as president (1869-1877) he scarcely attempted to control events. He made injudicious appointments to public office, and official corruption tainted his administration, although Grant himself was not involved in the peculations.…

In the novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany, the book portrays an unusual image with armlessness. Many objects throughout the writing have no arms. For example, the Watahantowet’s armless totem, the armless dressmaker’s dummy that belonged to John’s mother, the declawed armadillo, the armless statue of Mary Magdalene, and when Owen himself, loses his arms in the airport bathroom just before his death. God has taken every one of the arms and used them as His “instruments.” This illustration of armlessness represents losing a loved one or something of valuable possession. Armlessness was a reoccurring motif throughout the story. Irving seems to symbolize the theme as helplessness. Although there are many examples of armlessness, there are a few that include arms. After Owen had taken the arms off of the Mary Magdalene statue he had attached them to the wire sockets in the dressmaker’s dummy. This could represent the outstretched pose of Christ’s crucifixion.…

To begin with, Remy’s rejection from various social groups leads him to become isolated and insecure. For instance, Remy’s first rejection occurs when Fudge disregards Remy’s study time and also when Remy calls the Columbia University campus police due to Fudge’s party disrupting the peace within their on campus apartment. Lastly, when Remy moves out of the apartment due to Fudge’s unwillingness to compromise can be seen as Remy’s final rejection. Those minor confrontations resemble Remy’s rejection from the minorities’ social group. Moreover, Remy’s social rejection from the fraternity also provokes him to feel isolated and insecure. In particular, after Kristen runs from the fraternity’s house, Billy soon follows her; however, Remy misinterprets the situation and praises Billy for having sexual relations with Kristen. Following the incident, the fraternity dismisses Remy’s attempt to be involved which causes Remy to feel isolated and insecure due to his inability to bind with his peers.…

I thought it was astounding that one could even change classifications on paper just by who they are living with, even with no choice of their own. Gregory was put in a unique situation where he not only got to see how life was as being classified as a white and colored person but even got a whole new perspective because of his situation. For example while he was being classified as colored, he was not allowed to date a white girl. However if he attempted to date a colored girl with a darker skin tone than him, he was scrutinized just as much.…

“You know anybody can play a composition and use far-out chords and make it sound wrong. It’s making it sound right that’s not easy.” This quote spoke by Thelonious Monk himself represents his whole career into two sentences. He was widely considered one of the most influential jazz piano musicians. What is known about Monk’s early life is very little. Thelonious Sphere Monk was born October 10, 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Monk’s family was made up of his parents Thelonious and Barbara Monk and two siblings, Marian and Thomas. One of the first musical sounds Monk heard came from a player piano his parents owned. Then by the age of nine he began to pick up melodies on the piano and started teaching himself how to read music by watching over his sister’s piano lessons. A year after moving to New York City from North Carolina Monk’s father became extremely ill, therefore leaving his mother to raise the three children by herself. Although the family’s budget was tight Monk’s mother was able to save up to buy a baby grand Steinway piano. By the age of eleven, Monk’s mother had saved enough money to pay for formal piano lessons for her son. At this young age it was clear that piano was Monk’s passion in life.…

In our last class we examined the argument of William Clifford, and William James. In this essay I will simply examine the two opposing sides. Clifford takes the side of Evidentialism. Evidentialism is the standing that for a belief to be knowledge, it must be supported by evidence. According to evidentialism, everyone has a rational and moral duty to believe only those claims that are supported by sufficient evidence. If a belief doesn't fit in with well established scientific beliefs or isn't discovered through normal scientific practices, then it isn't rational and doesn't count as genuine knowledge. On the other side is James, who believes in Pragmatism. In an essay entitled, Pragmatism's Theory of Truth James wrote " Truth happens to be an idea. It becomes true, is made true by events. It's verity is in fact an event, a process: the process namely of its verifying itself, its verification. Grant an idea or belief to be true, what concrete difference will its being true make in anyone's actual life? How will the truth be realized? What experiences will be different from those which would obtain if the belief were false? What, in short, is the truth's cash value in experiential terms?"…
