Towson University was once known as the Maryland State Normal School for the instruction of teachers in 1864. Two years after being created in 1864 the school opened its doors with McFadden Alexander Newell being its president. Newell had goals to establish model schools for teachers to practice their skills and see first-hand how what they have learned worked on elementary students. Unfortunately, these practice schools were often across town because of space limitations.…

Kids started school when they were five and completed it when they turned and adult, which is twenty. As all the students came in, they noticed the school was too small, so they made another one. K-8 grades would be in school 1, while grades 8-14 would be in school 2. Preschool kids would be taught in the assisted living because the community found it helped the overall moral of all who lived there, and it taught the kids how to care for one another. Basic subjects for all students were math, basic science, basic medicine, English, physical fitness, history of the queen and of the outside world, arts, and an expedition course. As the students learned the history of the land, they started calling it Ash-Land, and later on, the people voted for it to be named that so nobody would forget where they came…

Mystery surrounded the school for many decades referring to the actual beginning of the school. Diplomas found in the school vault show that the first students were in 1882 and the first graduating class was in 1886 with that class containing only four students. At the time the school was a small barn that could only accommodate those four students, but in 1895 the school built a two story wooden building with an auditorium, science laboratories, and library which the school was made to fit 250 students. At the cost of $5,100 which is equivalent to $145,000 the first…

Education is the way to help people in a broken society, where we have many lost children in the streets and jails, and parents on drugs. Role-models are what’s needed; when a child sees the parents going to school and working, hopefully it will make him or her want to do the same. Also it’s a hard decision for a mother to make, having to leave young children and seek work, but in a society with many single mothers, it’s hard not to have to work. In a mother’s decision to work, she has to have a lot of faith that the morals and values that she instilled in her child at home would help keep them safe and make positive decisions while she’s away from the home working. Education and employment is the only way to empower a society that has been torn down from years of poverty. One of the welfare reforms triumphs was an explosion for never married mothers; who rose from 45 percent in 1995 to more than 60 percent between 2000 and…

March 30, 2012. I think we will all agree that this day is definitely not ordinary. Today, we acknowledge the people met, the lessons learned, the tears shed, the laughter relished, and the memories made in our six years as elementary students. Today, we show our teachers, our parents, and most importantly ourselves that we’re no longer children. Today we show the world that we are ready to take on the next stage of our academic life: High School.…
