The purpose of this assignment was to be able to identify the concept of discourse community as introduced by John Swales in a fictional character. I do feel that my team and I accomplished the purpose of this assignment as we develop the required guidelines as they were asked such as the discourse community map and the activity system triangle. Our map was clear and we identified the three discourse communities each one of my teammates knew the content. As I learned indeed John Swales discourse communities may be used in my future career as a future lawyer I would be using more than one of the six characteristics that Swales defined such as lexis, common goals, intercommunication among its members, and feedback.…
To be a part of a discourse community, one must possess factual knowledge and draw upon the values of the members within that discourse to be accepted. Not everyone is able to claim they are a part of a discourse community. There are many concepts that you must understand and comprehend. To really understand that the Salvadorian Community is a discourse community, I’ve had to assimilate the terminology used as well as knowledge in their traditional cuisine and customs. The culture runs in my blood, but it has been up to my family to pass on the knowledge that is held within the Salvadorian Community. Although the Salvadorian discourse community seems to only concern a small group of people. The issue should in fact concern the large U.S. population…
Everyone belongs to various communities, but one type of community that many people don’t recognize is discourse communities. Discourse communities may be difficult to identify and pick out, but thankfully, author John Swales outlines the necessary criteria needed to be considered a discourse community. Swales says, “The concept of discourse community is proposed as a more functional and goal-directed grouping than either speech community or speech fellowship” (Swales 211). He then goes on to give us six qualities that describe what a discourse community should have: common public goals, methods of communication, providing information and feedback to one another, discourse expectations, specialized terminology, and a rank and change membership. American linguist…
As the years pass I seem to become a part of more and more communities. Due to every job that I have had and all the new friends I make along to way. Through out high school I became apart of many different social discourses. Between the sports, friendships, jobs, and activities I became a part of, it almost seemed like everywhere I went I was talking in a different language. It's strange when you actually come to think about it, there are several different non-verbal and verbal cues among each community.…
I believe that Laura did not want to fully immerse herself in English, feeling that she would betray her Mexican memories and alienate herself from her community. This may have caused the difficulty she was having with English composition. Convinced that she was a “crummy writer”, Laura was petrified of being considered unintelligent (Rose 1). Laura dropped Rose’s class four times. He is recording her fifth attempt (Rose 1). The fear she feels has driven her to despair over her lack of progress. In addition, students who are deficient in the English skills and need to complete written assignments at UCLA are referred to as “bonehead” by some of the professors and considered “marginal” by the college (Rose 2). Students in Laura’s position can sense how their professors feel. They know the labels the college place on them. Each time Laura quits, she reinforces, to herself, that she is a failure. The feeling…
In classrooms students are raised to become educated, to become good people, and to overall become a strong, integrated part of society. In our english classes more specifically, we are taught to be these people through the morals that are instilled in the pieces we study. In Francine Prose’s essay on education, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read she inaccurately claims that the importance our teachers set upon those values squanders any appreciation built for the quality of an author’s diction and syntax. In english, much more than any other class, students are given invaluable opportunities to not only go over an author’s word choice, but to actually use their work as a way to build on their own values.…
Imagine being a student whose biggest concern was trying to get through the day alive. Surrounded by drugs, gangs, guns and violence, you can see why the rhythm of poetry isn’t the concern of students. This was the life of the students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Many of these students had a choice between attending school or boot camp; few aspired beyond basic survival. Add to this, a school recently integrated that in the past two years was one of the top scholastic schools. Most of the teachers are bitter because of this change and are frustrated with the caliber of students present because academics aren’t their priority. Mrs. Gruwell is a newly hired, optimistic teacher, which breaks that mold. She is committed to do all she can to make sure her students succeed, not only with English but also with learning to respect one another. Student teacher relationships are essential to a student’s learning. Without a positive relationship present in the classroom the learning process may not be successful. The movie Freedom Writers suggests that education needs to encourage a more motivating teaching style, remove the focus from grades so students are able to participate without the fear of grades, and nurture student teacher relationships to help relate with students.…
Therefore, leaving many students with a lack of knowledge of doing things that do not equip them, and leaving many students below par and exposed to the norms available. While, preventing them from becoming effective and succeeding in their academic discourse communities. To support Bartholomae argument, he uses examples of former student essays and how many students struggle with basic writing skills verses how the expert writer writes.…
After I watched two hours of intense play and the huddle split, I observed high fives and complex handshakes of some sort. “Hampton on three. Hampton on three. ONE, TWO, THREE, HAMPTON!” They started coming my way; as an ex-basketball player, deep down I yearned for a handshake or some kind of acknowledgment, but I sat there like a fork in the road. Each member parted around me to my left and to my right, some giving head nods and some giving nothing at all. I quickly realized that I was clearly not a part of this discourse community.…
The On-Site property manager is accountable for property operations, overseeing and enhancing the value of the property. Community Managers must embrace the concepts of Level 5 Leadership, Group Responsibility and Servant Leadership. The purpose for a property manager is to well manage and coordinate persons, activates, and available resources in order to accomplish community objectives as set forth by the Regional Property Manager and property owner. They must report their District/Regional Manager. Has a property manager you have to supervise the entire on-site staff (Assistant Community Manager/ Bookkeeper, Leasing Coordinator, Leasing Consultant, Community Service Supervisor/Assistant Community Service Supervisor, Service Technician, Make-Ready Technician, Groundskeeper, Painter, and Housekeeper.) This job has other responsibilities such as: meeting financial goals, leasing housing, administrating the property, resident retention, keeping up with maintenance, and making sure safety is enforced. A person in this occupation must conduct all business in accordance with TMI polices and procedures. I took a journey through my mother’s occupation as an On-Site Property Manager. She has been in this field for almost 5 years. I guess that would make her and old timer in her job. In order to be in this field all she had to have was a high diploma and a lot of people skills. She has to attend a yearly training program. That's good because the learning never stops in the occupation. Any person going into this field has to know the meaning of HUD (Housing Urban Development) and RD (Rural Development). You also have to read the Louisiana Fair Housing policies and procedures. My mother says she chose this field because it allows her to put her business management classes to good use. She enjoys her job because it gives her a chance to display her leadership qualities and she loves being in charge of a large group of people. When asked,” What advice would she give a new comer…
Not too long ago, I was part of a group in my English 101 class. We were assigned with researching and writing a paper on a discourse community of our choice. The community we decided to focus our work on was the Edge at Mason, a group that helps bring people together through team-building strategies. The need that our work was attempting to respond to was the need to come up with a solution to a potential problem within the discourse community. This problem arose from the lack of any formal supervisior or scribe during the community's half-hour discussions following each day. These discussions are meant to provide information about various things that went on during the community's normal operation hours, however, without any formal supervision, there is no official way to document any important suggestions or information presented during these meetings. As such, our work was supposed to explain how the community could resolve any potential problems in their…
It seems like it has been years since I set foot in my kindergarten classroom. Those were among the hardest years in my life. Before school, I was accustomed to speaking my native languages, Tagalog and Spanish. Hardly knowing much English I soon began to struggle in class trying hard just to sustain with the rest of the pack. I did not understand why certain words went together, why people talked the way they did, why I have to mimic the same hand motions on paper like the others to communicate. Curiosity of the other language continued to haunt me each and every day, that is, until I was transferred to another class. This new teacher was like the candle that lit up my dark room. To this day I still remember Mr. Schall sitting down beside me on the rainbow rug with a book in hand, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. As he read I absorbed each word like a sponge. I soaked up all the secret knowledge confined within the pages. “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom will there be enough room,” he read over and over again. Will there be enough room? I asked myself. I understood the importance and difficulty of earning a great education from that point on I knew that I had to preserve and improve on my literature. Kindergarten was the establishment of my literary knowledge.…
with one another. Aside from the club events, the college student and the buddy are supposed to meet twice a month to develop a relationship with each other. Even though Best Buddies meet together as a group, they are not a discourse community.…
Following by using his freshman writing class as a persuasive example, Stanley then argues that his students, who he taught to create their own languages, have mainly mastered the relationship in writing forms at the end of the class. He then proposed his idea that the weakness of form will eventually result in the failure of expressing content. The misplacing of effort is the cause of poor quality writing. Stanley Fish believes the process of learning forms is replaced by going over ideas, arguments, namely content. He insists that students learning those content, which they perhaps already seen or known before, are a waste of time. He asserts that learning forms instead of contents can save students from the horn of this dilemma.…
