At some point in our life, we have looked around; and thought how different people look. This can be attributed to the differences in culture, religious beliefs, language, and race. Most people today judge others based on these characteristics. Diversity makes up a big part of our world today from the workplace, clients, customers we serve, military, and our neighbors. Diversity is a very complicated topic with many components. I have decided to touch on some key topics: the impact, the benefits, legal risks, managing and the stumbling blocks of diversity in the workplace.
Defining what Diversity is has become a major stumbling block in any discussion. So in order to understand the impact of diversity in the workplace, let’s define what diversity and culture is according to Webster’s Dictionary.
Diversity

Workplace diversity is defined as “ways that people differ that may affect their workplace experiences in terms of performance, motivation, and communication” (Harvey, 2011, p. xiv). It is important to have an understanding of cultural, ethnic and gender differences by managers and professionals in order to have an effective working environment. This can be accomplished when managers and professionals are able to understand their own identities, race/ethnicity, and their own biasness. While attempting to overcome our own biasness can be challenging, acknowledging them can prevent us from discriminating actions (Harvey, 2011).…

“Little lady, it's best you get out of here, it's not safe for you here.”, it's a phrase I heard more often than not while living in Baltimore, between the ages of nine and eleven. When I first heard this phrase I was convinced the officer and the city workers were just worried for my friends, who happened to be African-American and Latino, and I as a whole and just chose me out of the group to speak to. I am a white-passing Native American female, who lived in a city which has a predominantly, 63.7 percent, Black population.. I never looked at myself as privileged because of how I grew up, with a single mom, on the WIC program, and with no money to spare. But I soon realized, at quite a young age, just how wrong I was.…

Allowing diversity in the workplace could increase work morale, attendance, customers, and efficiency and create a less stressful environment for employees. This is possible by first increasing the diversity in the workplace and allowing for employees to learn about each other’s differences and…

How do people behave? What makes us act the way we do? There are as many different answers as there are people. Each person is a unique makeup of individual characteristics which blend together to form the personality, the behavior of the person. We can identify certain broad characteristics of groups of people and apply them to individuals to get an idea of how they will behave in a given situation. This is called stereotyping and, when taken too far, will give a distorted picture of what to expect of a persons behavior. While you can never get a fully accurate picture of how someone will behave based on their demographics and characteristics, you can make certain general guesses that will point you generally in the right direction regarding their behavior.…
