Assignment 1
Research and produce a checklist and evaluate your current learning and teaching environment in relation to it for –
a) Inclusive learning good practice
b) Opportunities for learners to practise Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills.
Inclusive Learning
Inclusive learning is as Wilson (2009) states is “about creating interesting, varied and inspiring learning opportunities for all learners; ensuring all learners contribute and are never disadvantaged by methods, language or resources”
This is a comprehensive statement and I fully appreciate the fact that learners “are never disadvantaged by methods, language or resources”. The ICT industry is one such area where as experience as shown that all facets (methods, language and resources) have to be clearly explained and reinforced to ensure learning has taken place. Due to the nature of ICT, on most occasions it is akin to teaching learners another language due to the fact the learners are coming across new terms such as “motherboard”, “CPU”, “ATX”, “RAM” and “Router”.
Another part of this statement that stands out is “ensuring all learners contribute”. In theory, this may sound good but, in practice it is one of the hardest obstacles a teacher faces today. The reason is that due to the frenetic nature of a session, it is difficult to “ensure all learners contribute” if you have a class of say 25-30 learners. However, my research on inclusive benefits has given me “food for thought” and regardless of the class size, the benefits clearly outweigh the obstacle mentioned above and I will try to alter my session planning so that “all learners contribute”.
Inclusive Learning Good Practice Checklist
To overcome the boundaries that are presented from ICT, it is essential to incorporate inclusive learning to provide a dynamic and interesting session for learners.
