Merger between BA and Iberia tend to be horizontal integration. Horizontal integration occurs when a firm is being taken over by, or merged with, another firm which is in the same industry and in the same stage of production as the merged firm, e.g.BA and Iberia. The goal of horizontal integration is to consolidate like companies and monopolize an industry. Besides, they can also gain Economic of Scale when doing such strategies. Put another way, they can reduce average cost of production in the long run. For example, according to extract 1, they may also have more buying power when it comes to negotiations to buy new planes from Boeing and Airbus.…

    The British Economic Miracle

    • 6970 Words
    • 28 Pages

For much of the last forty years Britain was perceived to be in decline and the UK model of capitalism to be failing. The unsuccessful modernisation programmes in the 1960s and 1970s led to a different turn of policy in the 1980s under the Thatcher Government, which sought to reconstruct the older UK liberal model, drawing inspiration from the US rather than from Europe. The Thatcher Government helped create conditions for a new political economy to emerge in Britain after 1992 which has provided a sustained period of economic growth and financial stability. Its reforms were consolidated and extended by the Blair Government. The article will discuss the historical trajectory of the British economy in the postwar years, and the choice between Europe and America. It will examine why the UK model is once again claimed to be a success, and whether it is sustainable.…

In the early 18th century, before the introduction of free trade, the British economic system was known as mercantilism. It intended to protect and stimulate domestic interests. This was achieved by implementing Navigation acts and tariffs. The theory of the tariff is to raise prices of the produce and therefore generate tax revenue. It also has the effect of reducing imports. The tariff was imposed in order to fund war and interest on national debt. The by-product of this tariff was a reduction in imports into Britain, which meant that domestic producers were protected. The large disadvantage to this fiscal intervention was that it created an incentive to smuggle and black markets established themselves. Protectionism was also imposed by way of Corn Laws, from 1815-46, they were strictly enforced. These laws restricted the growth of the domestic market for manufactured goods by forcing food prices up to an artificially high level.…

    Japan vs Uk Economy

Japan is the first Asian country to industrialise its economy and become on par with the advanced west. This is all down to a very strong and determined work ethic and their technological aptitude. They place very high emphasis on education and with a comparatively small defence allocation (1% GDP) they have one of the most technologically advanced economies in the world. Japan enjoyed real economic growth for three decades with a 10% average in the 1960s, 5% in the 1970s and 4% in the 1980s. However, growth slowed markedly in the 1990s to an average of 1.7% due largely to inefficient investment and an asset price bubble in the late 1980s. In March 2011, Japan was hit with their strongest-ever earthquake, and a subsequent tsunami, which caused major devastation, killing thousands and damaging several nuclear power plants. The catastrophe disrupted the country's economy and its energy infrastructure, and severely strained its capacity to deal with the humanitarian disaster (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ja.html).…
