The preferred methods of our learning style allow us to gather, and use knowledge gained in a specific manner. Multi-tasking is “bad for the quality of cognitive work” which lead to a declaration of memory. A study of Stanford reports that multi-taskers cannot focus on subject. They believe they are improving their ability but actually lessening their ability “through over consumption”. A report found on the article claims that “the multitasking on a laptop poses a significant distraction to both users and fellow students and can be detrimental to comprehension of lecture content”: people who multi-tasks have lower grade. As a result, people are decreasing their ability while having a laptop during…

Another challenge to me is remaining focused and organized in the online classroom environment. Since there is no weekly commitment to attend a classroom at a set day and time, it can be quite easy to allow yourself to fall behind on assignments. Since this is an open forum, if you do not have a personal commitment and ownership of the material you will not be successful.…

On-task behavior is very important in the classroom. According to Jones & Jones (2010), on-task behavior should be magnified more so than off-task behavior. “Although we often fall into the trap of believing that critical remarks will improve students’ behaviors, research suggests that the opposite is true.” (Jones & Jones, 2010, p. 75). Technology has affected the ability to keep students on task in both negative ways and positive ways. It has affected the ability to keep students on task negatively with the distraction of personal smart phones that divert students from their school work and activities. In many of the classes that I have observed over the last school year, students were on their cell phones watching YouTube videos or checking their Facebook pages. Some teachers allowed students to have their cell phones out if they finished all of their school work and others had a zero tolerance policy for cell phones in the classroom. Technology has affected the ability to keep students on task in a positive way by using different methods to grasp students’ attention; PowerPoint presentations that can be visually stimulating, educational video clips as well, and personal devices that allow students to respond to multiple choice questions during class discussions. Teachers should regulate the use of technology to prevent classroom management issues by having a zero tolerance policy for cell phones. I believe that cell phones are more of a hindrance in the classroom and students are too distracted by text messages and Facebook updates. Technology can be used to prevent classroom management issues by engaging students in lessons that integrate technology like the examples I have previously listed. Websites like…

The questionnaire asks a series of questions which help the individual to identify their preferred learning habits. The answers to these questions are scored and the person then falls into one of four categories which is the learning style best suited to them based on the answers they have given. Honey and Mumford put forward four main learning styles; Reflectors, theorists, pragmatists and activists, each with their own characteristics. Reflectors prefer to learn through activities which allow them to observe, think and review situations. They like to collect data and mind map. Theorists prefer to think problems through step by step using lectures, systems, case studies etc. Quite often they are perfectionists. Pragmatists enjoy applying new ideas and techniques to actual practise to test their use. They prefer learning through lab work, field work and observations rather than lectures or lengthy discussions. They are practical and like concepts which can be applied to their own jobs. Activists enjoy new things and like challenges. They prefer to learn through activities role-playing, problem solving and small group discussions. They are unlikely to prepare for their learning or to review it afterwards. This was Honey and Mumford’s interpretation of learning styles theory however…

Surfing the web might harm your studies because it causes you to waste time. Whenever I go to study the first thing I do is open my computer. This harms my studies because I spend hours on YouTube, socializing with friends, and I easily lose track of time. When I’m surfing around on the Internet, even while studying, one of my main targets of interest is YouTube. This is a streaming website where other users submit videos to be enjoyed by people, such as myself. I follow several people on YouTube whom upload videos daily, due to this I can spend hours watching videos to make sure I don’t miss anything. By the time I’m done, most of the day will be gone and I have very little time to do anything else, such as study. Another distraction that harms my studies whilst on the Internet is socializing with friends through video games. When I get into a video game I usually play for a minimum of four hours before moving onto something else in my day. This is harmful to my studying because I waste a lot of time, and my eyes get very tired making it hard to read information. Whether it’s watching videos on YouTube, playing a game, or just searching for information around a random topic that interests me, I easily lose track of time. I’ve been known to grab hold of a topic and not let go until I find the information I’m looking for or until my body finally tells me that it’s far past bedtime. At first thought you may think this is not a bad habit but the topics I choose are always irrelevant to studying. This is detrimental because a lot of time gets wasted with no fruitful results in my studies. This is why I believe surfing the web harms my studies.…

My personal learning style is doing. I learn best from the hands on approach of getting in to a topic or job and attempting to complete it on my own. This allows me to see my mistakes and not have them be prevented before they happen, which allows me to note the problem and fix it. I find it much harder to learn using concrete experience and reflective observation. The fact that both these styles are much harder for me to learn from effects my overall learning style because of how I learn, just watching someone else complete a task is not enough for me to learn by.…

Procrastination and typing are two challenges that concern me the most about my online learning. I sometimes important things off until last minute typically because I get busy doing other things and forget about them .I usually think about them at the last minute and try to hurry to get things done. Since I have begun my online learning I have tried to stay on top of things instead of waiting until the last minute to get it done as I normally would. I feel that I am a strong willed and I can get anything done that I set my mind to do. I have planned a certain time each day to study and do homework to keep from getting behind. I will seek help from my professor, counsler, and online resources as I need to become successful at Ashford.
