The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967: protects certain applicants and employees 40 years of age and older from discrimination on the basis of age in hiring, promotion, discharge, compensation, or terms, conditions or privileges of employment. Employers who are found guilty by the commission shall be punished by a fine of not more than $500 or by imprisonment for not more than one year or by both.
The Equal Pay Act of 1963: requires that men and women be given equal pay for equal work in the same establishment. Employers may not pay unequal wages to men and women who perform jobs that require substantially equal skill, effort, and responsibility and that are performed under similar working conditions within the same establishment. Employers that are found guilty shall upon conviction thereof be subject to a fine of not more than $10,000, or to imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): prohibits employers of 15 or more workers, employment agencies, and labor organizations of 15 or more workers from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities. If the investigation reveals a violation the employer agreement may include a job offer, back pay, reinstatement, promotion or reasonable accommodation.
