All relationships have ups and downs, but in order for them to work it is substantial to have a few important qualities. Both partners must possess the qualities for a relationship to be long lasting. Liam from the short story “Bluffing” by Gail Helgason, and Ann from the short story “The Painted Door” by Ross Sinclair lack being trustworthy, selfless, and caring, while their partners, Gabriella and John carry these traits, making it difficult for both relationships to be successful.
Being trustworthy is a critical component to have in a relationship. Both relationships lack trust, but Ann and Johns is worse then Liam and Gabriella’s. Liam and Gabriella’s trust is broken when the bear is coming towards her and “Behind her she heard [Liam]. Liam wasn’t just steeping back he was running away as fast as he could” (Helgason p.75). This shows that Liam weakens his trust with Gabriella because he tells her “I meant the bear to come after me instead of you” (Helgason p.76), but really he was running to get away from the bear, which makes it hard to trust him after he lied. While Liam weakened the trust in him and Gabriella’s relationship, Ann breaks the trust in her and John’s relationship. When John is away helping his father, Ann sleeps with Steven, breaking the trust John had for Ann. Throughout the story Ann seems to show that she likes Steven more then John, until after she sleeps with him. When “She let her hand rest a while on Steven’s shoulder. It would be easier were he awake now, with her, sharing her guilt” (Ross p.242), shows that she broke her trust and she is now feeling guilty. Although both relationships have a loss in trust, Liam and Gabriella’s could be healed.
As well as being trustworthy, having a selfless personality is also crucial in a relationship. Liam shows he is the opposite of selfless when Gabriella comes across the bear and “[Liam] was running away as
