In “Streetcar named desire” the relationship between the sisters are portrayed as very different. This is because we see the worlds as very different as Blanche is more educated and possibly one that has a more heritage then Stella. We also see that Blanche was a teacher and women that was working whereas Stella is a house wife who is married and dependent on her husband Stanley.
Similarly in “top girls” both the sisters relationship is portrayed as negative. We immediately have awareness that Marlene is an educated woman. This is because the opening of the play (Act1) shows that Marlene is celebrating some good news which is that she has got a higher promotion. This shows me that Marlene has very high ambitions and is hard working and also a woman who cares about the status she has. However Churchill presents Marlene’s sister, Joyce a women that in those days is expected to be like. This is because Joyce is a house wife who looks after a child which in those days was expected of women. She does not work but has a few jobs such as cleaning that are seen as very low status jobs. This links in to the fact that Marlene and Joyce are very different as Marlene has a very high status job whereas her sister has a very low status job meaning both their expectations are very different.
