Subject: Request for website usability and recommendation research
Statement of Problem:
In today’s world, the need and use of technology is growing rampant in the education field. Due to this, many government learning entities such as Universities offer online courses that allow of distance learning, and because of this website usability is a large aspect to these online courses.
What is website usability? According to Jay Nielsen’s article, usability is “a quality attribute that assesses how easy user interfaces are to use” (Nielsen, J 2013). Nielsen adds that there are five key components of website usability, as follows (Nielsen, J 2013):
Learnability: is it easy for users to grasp website/class concept?
Efficiency: How fast will users be able to complete tasks?
Memorability: After a period of absence, once the website is revisited, is it easy to navigate?
Errors: How many and How often do users make mistakes? Satisfaction: Is the design aesthetically pleasing?
These issues are extremely important when looking towards an online platform such as a university course because it is the main form of communication with you and your students. If a student is unable to use a online course due to the website layout and usability, it can lead to poor learning aspects and grades which in turn will produce a unpopular response to your online course.
Objective
The study that is being proposed is to conduct research to improve the website usability of the course ENC3212. I will use research to diagnose areas of the interface that can use improvement with regards to student usability. The main scope of my research will focus on the communication platform of the online course, along with the clarity in the explanation of assignments. Using the previously listed key concepts of website usability, as a student I
