In the romantic tragedy of Ethan Frome, Edith Wharton uses Mattie Silver as a literary foil to her older cousin, Zeena Frome. Often, Wharton uses descriptive imagery, contrasting brightness and warmth, to darkness and cold, to highlight the differences between the two women. Mattie is typically shown in the light, reflecting or creating a source of heat. Ethan senses the change that came with Mattie’s arrival in his home. “...The coming to his house...was like the lighting of a fire on a cold hearth” (32). Feeling entombed in his bedroom with Zeena, Ethan looks at his door and thinks about Mattie. “...he had seen her lips in the lamplight he felt that they were his” (50). Lastly, after Zeena leaves for for a doctor’s appointment, Ethan recognizes…

In the chapter, The Red Candle, the author explains everything in detail. She explains about the red columns in front of the house for decoration, the red dragons, the red wedding dress with the red wedding veil, the red banners, the red palanquin, and finally the red candle. I found this as a motif because it appeared in almost every section of the 3rd chapter. Ying-Ying also explains that her mother gave her a necklace made out of red jade. Red was a traditional color in Chinese culture, possibly a powerful color, as purple was to Europe.…

Wharton’s novella bases the narrator’s observations of Frome’s residence where he stays during a particular winter storm. Ethan Frome is portrayed as a mysterious figure - injured in a grisly accident in his earlier days. The description of Frome as Starkfield’s most striking character and ruin makes him a character worth investing interest. The “ruin of a man” that is Frome, while lame, has a powerful and careless look (Mellow, 1980). The narrative continues with details while presenting very scanty information about the character involved. Mattie Silver for example, her infatuation with Ethan is never quite revealed, she seems to be a well rounded person who mainly focuses on Ethan and Starkfield. In effect, the author of the novella sees to it that many of her characters remain vague and beyond full understanding so the reader can expand and imagine.…
